What's your favorite foreign band/artist/song? Mine has to be Noma Numi Yei by Ozone. It's french, but cool.

Re: Foreign Music, Bands, and Songs

Well, I live in the USA and probably about 90% of the bands I listen to are foreign. The majority of the progressive rock of the '70s comes from good old England (King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes, Genesis, Camel to name a few). Nowadays, Sweden seems like the home of neo-prog/prog metal with bands like Anglagard, The Flower Kings, Pain of Salvation, Opeth and others.

Dungen. Swedish psych-folk, and it's brilliant.

Also, Sigur Ros.

Re: Foreign Music, Bands, and Songs

A good amount of my music is from continents other than North America...probably around 50% of it. About 25% isn't in English. There is some excellent stuff out there if you just look for it. Sadly, most music doesn't get the exposure it deserves, and that is especially true when it comes to bands from other continents trying to break into the North American market. Some guys, like Rammstein and such, even make the mainstream, but that's really rare.

Right now, for example, I'm listening to a black metal band from South Korea. I thought it'd be pretty weird, but they're actually really damn good. Their song titles are in English, as is the band's name, but their lyrics are in Korean, and it gives the band an odd, almost otherworldly sound, because it doesn't sound like the Scandanavian languages that a lot of similar bands use...it's melodic in a completely different way. That's what really makes me like "foreign" bands. There's so much to hear from them them, across any genre, that hasn't been heard before, and for the astute listener it can be a very rewarding experience to move beyond the comfort zone.

Re: Foreign Music, Bands, and Songs

I listen to a lot of Japanese stuff, doesn't matter if it is the rock or the pop side of it, I just listen. I like Dir En Grey, and Gackt is pretty sweet too. I just find that I like the upbeat style of J-Pop, it can get you up and moving.

Re: Foreign Music, Bands, and Songs

I listen to nothing but foreign stuff. Finnish music is crap.

If you mean songs that aren't in English, there are a few bands I like. Some of my favorites are Rammstein and Kent (although I don't like Kent in a way that'd make me get any of their albums).

OK, OK, let me rephrase.

"I listen to nothing but foreign stuff. Most Finnish music is not exactly my cup of tea."

First off. The name of the song is "Dragosta Din Tei", not "Noma Numi Yei". Secondly, it's not French, it's Romanian. Thirdly, something seems to be horribly wrong with the HTML on that site. >_>;

Anyway, back on topic.

I listen to several J-rock bands, such as the pillows and Psycho le Cému, and I also listen to a couple of French bands, namely Air and Daft Punk.

Re: Foreign Music, Bands, and Songs

To put prespective for everybody, I come from America. My parents come from a little known country called Burma and naturally, have brought some of their ethnic songs with them. Mostly covers of American songs and just some traditional folk-ish tracks that I don't exactly like. But personally, I enjoy some J-Pop(Japan) and their techno and synth-pop, which seems to be bigger than in America and I do like their stuff. The only European band I've been exposed to that much is Nightwish from Finland. Well, I don't know their background-- but it seems like they do their stuff for English audiances for the most part. Eh, I don't know, I wasn't exactly one that followed them.

The majority of the music I listen to are from Europe, especially Scandinavia. There are a few American bands I listen too(BLS, Shadows Fall), but not many.

My favorite has to be Snow Patrol. They're from Ireland or Northern Ireland, I'm not sure, just somewhere on the good ol' Emerald Isle!. I really like thier sound, it can be kinda mellow or a little more upbeat.

I listen to some J-pop, but I'm not one of those hardcore otaku anime fans that thinks J-pop is so awesome, and American music is horrible compare to J-Pop. Some J-Pop is fine, but there are some that are not so great. I also like Mexican rap as well, most because of the beats.

Yeah I know what you're getting at Eijiro but some people think that way, he is just trying to avoid that.

As for me, well some of my favorites, first off when it comes to dance I have the say Blümchen is my favortie, Origa is really good also, though I sometimes think the Russian and the English shouldn't be mixed. Then I must also say I like some Japanese techno and I guess some J pop as well. I also like some German rock, which would be Rammstein and Megaherz. Though if I'm going to listen to German music I prefer dance or disco. I also have to say some French music isn't bad either, if you like humor then Mononc Sergé is good. He makes fun of a lot of things. Les Respectables are good as well, though I don't know enough French to understand their music well.

Re: Foreign Music, Bands, and Songs

Like half of what I listen to is foreign.

I listen to a LOT of Turkish rock music, including:

Sebnem Ferah
Manga (Ha, yes. That's what they're called. ^_^)
Ebru Gundes

And random other Turkish bands I can't think of because I'm not in Turkey anymore. :'(

But Sebnem Ferah rocks. W00t yay.

Re: Foreign Music, Bands, and Songs

I'm pretty big on the asian music scene. Most of my music is stuff from Japan, China and Korea. I'm fond of a few other foreign artists, too. Music in German, Russian, Swedish, Finnish... whatever I can get my hands on that sounds good, really. I've always thought that foreign countries are generally better at putting out good music. Alot of what comes out in America simply doesn't appeal to me. At least, none of what's super-popular and all over the airwaves.

Haven't listened to much of anything besides Dream Theater since my friend introduced them to me a few weeks ago, though.
