The intro to "Ride, Darkhorse, Ride" by 3 Inches of Blood is epic, methinks.

EDIT: The intro to Steely Dan's Josie is pretty instantly recognizable and fun. Also Alan Parson's Project has a song called Sirius, that is generally seen as an intro to not only the song "Eye In The Sky" but an epic intro to the whole album. I guarantee you've heard this, and never knew who it was. The Chicago Bulls used to use it as their intro music when Michael Jordan was on the team. Metallica, One is a great intro, just because. It's freakin' One! Metallica has a lot of epic intros, actually. John Mellencamp's I Need A Lover has an intro that's like, half the song XD Van Halen's Jump is another epic intro! Not that this music I'm mentioning is by any means my favorite, but I can recognize a great hook, and a great intro. There's a reason why this music stands the test of time.

Re: Top 10 Most Epic Intros
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD7amHfnS_0 I have failed to find a song by "The Sword" that isn't epic, but this one takes the cake. It's an intro song to the entire album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6Vf5syTfmE The intro to this just sets the mood up so perfectly that it constitutes an epic intro. Crack the Skye is a beautiful album, by the way.

Other notable intros:
Big Bottom - Spinal Tap (THREE bass guitars?) Thunderstruck - AC/DC (always gets people pumped up) Shaft - Isaac Hayes (The intro makes for more than half the song!) |

Re: Top 10 Most Epic Intros
The majority of the intros pointed out here neither qualify as significantly notable intros ("the beginning of a song" is not enough), nor are any of them epic in any way whatsoever, if we take epic to mean something along the lines of grandiose, impressive, and powerful, with a sense of gravity and meaning, in addition to flowing into the rest of the piece, while still remaining distinct from it.

Re: Top 10 Most Epic Intros
I quite like Irish music, so the introduction to The Corrs' rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" really appeals to me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhf-DPg3HXM Andrea Corr talks for a bit first, so fast forward to 0:45 to hear the introduction. The tin whistle and violin sound sublime together. Edit: Also, I've said this so many times already, but I can't get over how much I love Dolores O'Riordan's voice. The introductions of "Ridiculous Thoughts", "I Still Do" and "Yellow Skies" are great examples of her range: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4nG3...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VMyUaBgYLs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60DQu...eature=related She does the background vocal harmonies, as well as the main vocals in the rest of the songs. "Electric Blue Eyes" is another song by the Cranberries with a very interesting introduction, sung in Latin...it's sombre, sad and chilling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAVnR...eature=related |
