![]() I just watched this again after like, 10 years, last night on YouTube, really bored thinking it'll put me to sleep at it's terrible quality. And I know I'm going to be attacked for this one but, maybe it was just because it was late at night or something but, I really enjoyed it. As in, I liked it. I LIKED the Super Mario Bros. Movie. I **** you not, I enjoyed the film. Maybe it was it's nostalgic 90's charm, maybe it was because I haven't seen it in so long, maybe because it's the only movie where I'm supposed to take Bob Hoskins donned in cover-alls seriously, but like hell, it worked. For those who don't know, the movie has barely anything to do with Mario, but frankly, as a "dark" kid's movie (Something we rarely see these days, sadly), it holds up okay. It feels more like a movie of it's own with a bunch of Mario cameos thrown in for the hell of it. For instance Koopa (Who is only in his dinosaur/dragon/whatever the **** form what less than a minute near the end of the movie) uses a bullet bill as a bill for a gun in a couple of scenes, there's a bar called THWOMP'S, Yoshi is in it, and uhhh, I really can't think of much, to be honest. For those who don't know, the movie is about two plumbers (Suprise!) who, in attempt to clog up a sewer, find their way in another kingdom where they have to save a princess and bring back a magical rock so the Mushroom Kingdom and Brooklyn don't fuse together. To be honest, the basic plot is Mario enough to me and I thought the movie worked! Perhaps it was a tad... dark, for a Mario film, but this was before Mario was shouting "Woo-hoo!" all the time in the games, so the source material had much to be desired. Don't go in expecting anything amazing though, but the actors make this a very fun movie that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of ages. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo are both really great actors that pull this movie along and do a perfect Mario and Luigi team, they don't have to be shouting "Woo-hoo!" the whole movie to pull off a Super Mario Bros. to be honest. All in all, the movie is good, cheesy, 90's fun. Go into this movie expecting a cheesball of an action / science-fiction starring the Mario Bros. and you'll come out extremely happy. Go into this movie thinking you'll get a proper adaption of Super Mario Bros. and you'll be very disappointed.

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Super Mario Bros. may not be the blockbuster that it was intended to be, but like you said, it's a very fun movie to watch. A cult classic. I agree with pretty much everything you've said. The only thing I found weird was that Daisy was the princess, and not Peach.
Oh, and Goomba's dancing in the elevator? EPIC. ![]()

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
In future, I suggest you pay just a little bit more attention to the different boards on this forum. That way, you might actually post your thread in the right place.

C'mon, Tiroth! If you're gonna move the thread, you could at least tell us what you think about the movie the thread is about!

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
If I had ever actually seen it, that would be a possibility.

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Well last time I made a thread about games being made into TV shows and movies in the Movies thread and it got moved to the gaming forum. So wouldn't it be appropriate to put The Super MARIO Bros. movie in the gaming forum as well?

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
That's because your previous thread was about games, specifically the discussion of those qualities of certain games that might lend themselves well to movie adaptions. This thread is clearly discussing an actual movie.
And I, too, have yet to see the movie. I think I'll go to Netflix right now and add it, actually...

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
I can't believe you guys haven't seen it...
Anyways, yeah, it ain't the best movie quality-wise, but it has a lot of charm. Only thing that bothers me are the koopas and Bowser himself. They look nothing like turtles. When you watch it, just like the OP said, don't expect a true Mario Bros. fix. Instead, expect a funny low-budget film with charm. I do like the movie. It's not bad at all. And there are some pretty cool references to the Mario universe, even if the characters look nothing like their video game counterparts.

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
I watched it on YouTube too! Then I went to eBay and bought it.
I love this movie! I fell in love with Mario and Luigi, they are just perfect! The villains are good, although, I really hate the goombas. They look dumb and they could have been done better. Regardless, I still find myself laughing during the elevator scene. It's got just the right amount of action and comedy. ![]() Holy crap, I'm totally gonna go watch it today now! ^_^

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Whoa, hold the phone. I've always known about the little TV show, but I had never heard about a film. I just might have to look into that.

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Things wrong with this film:
1. Luigi is played by a Latino. 2. Luigi doesn't even have a mustache. 3. Goombas are the oppisote of what they are in the game. They have small heads and big bodies. 4. Marios last name is...Mario. 5. They have to save an archuloligist instead of a princess. 6. They have to save Daisy instead of Peach. 7. THEY USE GUNS. 8. Bowser is a human. |

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Um, Mario and Luigi's last name is Mario, because their the Mario Bros. You don't address siblings by the name of the oldest sibling, you address them by their last name.
I haven't watched it in years, but I remember liking it. I'll look it up on youtube sometime today.

Bottom line, the movie had to be changed because the literal aspects of the story based off the game are pretty much meant JUST for the games. Plus, they even added Yoshi in there! That makes everything in the movie worth it!

Raptors are also extinct, and no one's name is Mario Mario, and there aren't weird goomba people that are hella big with a tiny weird scaly heads. The movie's almost less believable than the games. In the games it's another realm, another world not based in ours so it's more believable. In the movie they try to mix our world and the Mushroom Kingdom, and it ended up just feeling awkward and out of place. |
