Metroid

I have heard rumors and seen a few trailers for it, though they may be fake and look pretty fake, but has Nintendo given the rights to someone to make a Metroid movie?

There were rumors in and around 2004 that John Woo was going to produce/direct a big screen version of Metroid. Nothing ever came of it. Since then, I haven't heard anything official sounding, only a few sketchy trailers on YouTube.

I do actually think the Metroid series has the best potential of becoming a live action movie, out of Nintendo's franchises. If they kept with an adult theme, and stuck to the main storyline, it could work out well. On the other hand, it would likely turn out to be a complete cheese fest, and completely tarnish the good Metroid name.

I'd be more for an animated movie, either in anime style, or CGI. Or, you know, just not bother at all.

If it were animated (preferrably CGI like Advent Children), then it wouldn't gain much attention in theatres in North America. If Nintendo wanted this to be big, they'll surely decide it to be a live action movie.

If they do decide to take that course of action, it better be damn worth watching. I'd hate to see a great series become a movie flop with cheesy acting and visual effects.

Well Metroid was based off the movie Alien, so it can be done. All I ask is they make Samus Aran a loner. Ok, maybe have a few scenes with her starting out/training with the Federation in her Zero Suit [/perviness]. Mentioning about her relation with the Chozo may confuse things, so I honestly don't think a movie adaptation would go that far into detail (so they'd most likely have Samus as the #1 agent of the Federation and they custom made this suite for her because of all the different planets she'll be traveling on).

^ The problem with that would be the fans complaining about the story being completely different than the game's story. If there's one thing video game fans hate about movie adaptations, it's the story alterations.

There was never much story to alter anyways. As long as the daunting, lonely atmosphere is not comprimised, any creative diversions the filmmakers make would be welcomed.

Comparing Mario Bros to Metroid isn't quite right. Metroid actually has a storyline from the start of the series much like Zelda, Mario had absolutely no storyline and they completely made it up for the movie.

Metroid has a crap load of story, and back story. You just have to look a little deeper for it. There's far too much to fit in to one movie.

That's the problem with making an MGS movie, and Kojima somehow found a way to do that. I don't know, but if it can be done then, well, it can be done. I still doubt that Metroid will become a movie anyway, but whatever, I'll wait to see what the future brings.

Mayhaps it does, but blogs about how Space Pirates experiment with Phazon does not equal a compelling movie experience. If they were to take their pickings from Metroid II-III (i.e. the sacrifice), then we'd have something, but still, that just isn't enough.

Another thing: they'd have to make some redesigns of the Metroids, cause the only people those floating blobs of undeveloped tentacles are going to scare are Japanese schoolgirls.

Here's the problem with that: Metroid does indeed have a lot of story, but very little of it is actually presented in the game itself. The last few Metroid games have pushed this forward a little bit (MP3, Fusion, Zero Mission to an extent), but other than the beginning and the end, it would be mostly Samus walking around by herself killing aliens. While I would be all for that (see XKCD's "River Tam Beats Up Everyone"), most people wouldn't like it as a movie. To make a movie of any of the games, they would have to very carefully intersperse backstory and plot throughout the move. Too much at either end of the movie would bring it down to a very low level.

Basically, there were 2 reasons why mario bros. went wrong

1. Nintendo was barely involved

2. The writers obviously were smoking something

Nintendo did say that the next time someones making a movie based on their property, they'll be involved.

If I may make a suggestion for who to play as Samus, I'd recommend Kristanna Loken (she's the female Terminator in #3). If you look at the video I linked you to, start at 5:25 minutes into the clip (yeah, it's near the end), and doesn't that sorta seem "Samus-esque"? She's running around in a bomb shelter pointing her arm cannon. And looking at the film, we know she has the body for the role (which demands a lot of acrobatics and movement).

Supposedly, there was one in production, but it's in development hell right now.

Here's what they need to do to make a Metroid movie work. Give it more of a horror-feel than the action-adventure-feel of the games (After all, Metroid was based off of Alien.) Here's a plot summary idea- a group of Galactic Federation troops are sent to Zebes to investigate space pirate activity. These are the secondary characters; eventually, each of them get killed off, either in a heroic, dramatic way, or in a horrific, macabre way. Samus is sent to investigate, as well. She discovers the metroids.

Meanwhile, Ridley is sent by the Space Pirate Command to stop Samus. Samus is eventually captured, and is thrown in a prison. She has flashbacks about her past n' stuff involving her Chozo-populated home being destroyed by a group of pirates led by Ridley, and she wants revenge. She's going to be fed to Kraid; she shoots him to death and escapes. She fights Ridley with an ancient artifact she found on a Chozo statue, and destroys one of his wings. He escapes, barely living.

Samus finds Mother Brain, and she blows it up in a climactic battle. Ridley shows up when she thinks it's all over, and grabs her, ready to bite her head off. Samus, at just the right time, is able to shoot him in the face, and escape the space pirate compound, which is blowing up because of a bomb detonated by one of the dying Galactic Federation troops. Ridley is trapped inside.

Samus looks at the ruined compound, in a solemn way, remembering when she was young. The end- credits roll Star Wars style, with the classic theme playing in the background.

And then, we have sequels. Metroid Prime would follow that one, and continue on to Prime 2 and Corruption, as that would probably be the best path for the movies to follow.

Of course, we get mediocre movies like Advent Children when a videogame company itself is deeply involved in a movie. Here's what needs to be done- they need to get a good director, good writers, and a good cast.

I wouldn't mind a Metroid movie. That would be pretty cool. And, to spice things up, maybe the other bounty hunters from Metroid Prime: Hunters could appear in it?

I believe it was the fact that the director didn't know that Super Mario Bros. was a game at the time. Hard to believe, eh?

See, the hard thing about making a movie based on a game is, you'll either appeal to moviegoers and disappoint the fans, or appeal to the fans and disappoint the moviegoers. Find a middle section, and you may have mediocrity.

I think one of the big problems with video game movies is that nobody has attempted to make a movie out of a game that could actually make a good movie. Here's a list of various game movies:
Tomb Raider
Mario Bros.
Doom
Double Dragon
Street Fighter
Mortal Kombat
House of the Dead
Resident Evil
There are more, but I don't care to continue. Very few of those games could have been a good movie. Now, here's a list of games that one would think would have been made into movies:
Final Fantasy
Castlevania
Prince of Persia- the first of the new trilogy would be the best (Sands of Time)
Metal Gear
Fire Emblem
All of those have great elements for a movie, PoP in particular. Why nobody has attempted one, I'm not sure. As for Metroid, it would probably fit better in the category of games with cool action but little story. The fight sequences I have no doubt would be well done, but there's just not enough plot throughout any of the game to make a good movie out of it.

You don't play Metroid for plot or character development. You play to kick alien ass as a sexy bounty hunter in a robotic suit!

Well, yeah, that's a given. However, two hours of that in movie form might not be so good. I like the horror movie idea that Andross posted before. That could work out pretty good.
