The Golden Compass

Who liked it? Who didn't?

I love the books, and though the movie was different (when are they not), I thought it totally rocked! Great acting! Iorek was my favorite. Christopher Lee was awesome. Super cool. Loved Mr. Scoresby!

Evil monkey... >.>

It's out!? OMFG, I have to go see it immediately! Me and my Mum love the book. I just got the second one for Hanukah.

I heard they had to remove a lot of the anti-church stuff that was in the book.

Also, about the evil monkey. In the book he's a golden monkey, but in the trailers I've seen, he looks more of a reddish colour. Is he that colour, or golden, or a different colour?

It's pretty decent, the effects were relatively good, though.

Definitely a nice movie, but kind of overrated for my taste.

This movie was horrible, and wasn't Christopher Lee in, like, one scene?

The story feels forced, generic little british girl is too smart and plain annoying and things just start randomly popping up, sometimes for no reason whatsoever.

Nah. Some things were just refined so it doesn't look like the movie is specifically anti-Catholic.

Well, he couldn't literally be a golden monkey, but he was awfully close.

Yeah, but he was there more for support. If they decide to do the other movies, he'll probably have a larger role.

After Harry Potter, you'd think we'd have all been used to it by now.

Just because Christopher Lee is in it doesn't really mean anything, his "part" was so insignificant that nothing can really be said about him.

Most of the stuff that came up in the Golden Compass though had no point at all.

Nicole Kidman's character is the little british girls mother! Le gasp!........ So what was the use anyway when it's two minutes till the end of the movie? They saved the mean little boy!.... Okay, again, pointless. Lara are whatever her name is found out who the witches lover was!......... See where I'm going with this?

I have no desire to see this movie whatsoever. It's gotten pretty poor to mediocre (at best) reviews all around.

It's foolish to base your own opinions/actions on other reviews. If I ever did that, there would be many video games and movies that I'd never watch or play. If I based my life around other people's views, I would have a dull life indeed.

True.

It is however very wise to base whether or not you spend money on a professional reviewer's opinion.

Which is why I'm not seeing it unless someone else pays for it.

I have never read the books, but the movie looks intruiging, I might pick up the books before seeing the movie though.

I just saw it. They changed aroungd a bunch of stuff. For example, in the book she goes to Bolvangr before Svalbard, but in the book it's the opposite. Also, in the book, the evil bear king is called Ioufur Racknison, but in the movie it was Ragnar somethingsomething. The movie's ending is before the book's, and the book's isn't so happy.

All in all, it was a pretty good movie. It wasn't as good as the book, but then again, what movie is?

I've heard good things and bad. I'd say its dollar theater worthy. Especially for poor college students.

I have heard that the movies are quite different from the books though. The books were great, my question is: Is the movie still good if this is the case?

From the trailers that I have seen, the best portrayal, as in how I imagined the characters is Lee Scoresby, who surprisingly looked pretty close to how I imagined.

Yeah, because of the whole author of the book being atheist and all. Our church didn't ban it, but I've heard a lot of bad things about it. I honestly don't get that much into movies to care. I mean, the message in Matrix is - No God as well, but, it's still a freakin' awesome movie and I don't let it shake up my faith. So yeah, I'll go see this Golden Compass one day.

Wait, what? If there even was a message in the trilogy, it was that reality is a lie.

I found the movie pretty good, the beginning is long though. However on the last part I remember screaming "THIS IS SPARTA!" The people bagan to laugh. I picture the little boy and Lara, Lisy... whatever her name together.

The reviews I've seen have been, literally, all over the place.

Some people give it 4 stars, some 2.

Oddly enough, I think the movie's biggest problem (This is just my judging from the reviews) is that it tries to appeal to the fans of the books and new people, but doesn't quite manage it.

It tries to appeal to the fans by including as much of the story as it possibly can. By all accounts it actually manages this quite well, but fans are asking why they included scene x, but not y. In addition, some people are annoyed that the darker elements of the plot were removed.

On the other hand, people who aren't fans of the books are completely and totally confused by what's going on. People just appear, look awesome for 5 minutes, then vanish, never to be heard from again.

I think I will go see it, simply because I think that The Subtle Knife would probably fix most of these problems (Much like how the first Harry Potter movie made these exact same mistakes, while the 2nd onward got progressively easier to follow (save the 4th movie).)

I just won't go expecting a slow-paced movie with lots of deep philosophical questions, which seems to be what most of the reviewers were expecting. (Why they were expecting this from a children's movie is beyond me.)

I doubt...
Spoiler (Highlight to read):
A bear having is lower jaw swiped off
...is content for a child's movie. No, it seemed to have more of an air for adult audiences. Don't ask me why. That's just how it felt.

That's because our Church is smart and realizes fiction is fiction and that people can think and make decisions for themselves. It's ridiculous how wound up some people can get. Ironically, if a church were to ban this anyways, they'd be no better off than the Magisterium as portrayed in the movie and books.

That's up for you to decide. To me it's an awful lot like how the Harry Potter movies are in contrast to the books, but still highly enjoyable.

Lee Scoresby was incredible. Shame on me for never imagining him as an actual cowboy. ^_^'

I've been waiting for this film. I'm not a huge book/novel reader but having loved such as Narnia and lord of the rings, i imagine the golden compas being somewhere in between.

Anything remotely fantasy is good in my book.
