Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been officially announced, with a release date tentatively set for Summer 2011.

"It was announced today at an event at Disney's D23 Expo that Johnny Depp will be starring in the fourth PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN movie, ON STRANGER TIDES. They didn't reveal any details, but they did trot Depp out in full Jack Sparrow regalia. He appeared to be trying not to laugh as he asked the audience if they had seen a talking frog. Strange name, ON STRANGER TIDES. Not sure what could be stranger than a guy playing the organ with his tentacles...but hey, maybe this one will have a storyline that makes sense. (Honestly though, just give me Johnny Depp in eyeliner. I have a kind of thing for that.) The film is slated for release in Summer 2011."

From what I know, Jerry Bruckheimer will again produce the film, with Johnny Depp obviously back in the starring role. Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio are back on script duties. The Director role is currently unknown, as Gore Verbinski has previously expressed hesitation when it came to revisiting the franchise. As for the rest of the cast, Geoffrey Rush has expressed interest in playing Barbossa again, whereas Keira Knightly has stated that she finished playing Elizabeth Swann.

In spite of my own better taste and judgement, I am a huge fan of the entire franchise and am cautiously excited about the prospect of a new one. If Verbinski comes back on board, my excitement will definitely go up, however. I feel he's key to the series just as much as Depp is.

Sounds good. If Depp will be back, then it will be good without a doubt. ^^

Woot. I'm not a fan of having large franchises, but I love all 3 movies despite some of the critisms people give this movie. So I guess Will and Elizabeth are gone after what happened in the last film? I'd be glad to see Will gone as he kept getting less interesting as the films kept going on.

I'm quite a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, despite my initial lack of interest in the first movie. I don't really know what to expect from this movie, but it should be interesting.

Disney is seriously milking that Disney World ride for all it's worth.

Why? Why do they need another one? In my opinion the only actual good one was the first. 2 and 3 were alright.

It's profitable. And there's no one to wring their hands about art being defiled, so they can do whatever they want.

Let's hope. It won't have Will, therefore it must be good.

I ****ing hate Elizabeth Swann. I hope they just completely get rid of her character.

I'm really uncertain about this. I do know that Keira Knightley said she's not coming back when the rumor was first announced a long time ago.

As long as Geoffrey Rush is in there along with Depp, I don't care what the plot will be.

Hmm....I'm not so sure what to think of this.

The first Pirates film was awesome. It had just the right amount of action and a plot strong enough to carry the story but not so strong as to overshadow the other aspects of the film. The biggest plus for the first film was all the characters. The characters were so interesting and fun to watch that they carried the film themselves, they could've all just been looking for some generic treasure and I'd still want to watch it.

The problem with the second and third films is this character development was thrown out the window. Instead they tried so hard to make a complex and 'epic' plot, that it ended up just feeling empty and not as fulfilling as the first film. So if with this new film, they go back and focus more on characters and not so much on having ridiculous fight scenes and some sort of complex plot, I'll be happy. But as of now I have no idea of what to expect.

As long as Sparrow and Barbosa are in it, yes please. These 2 are hillarious.

Didn't they talk about going to find the fountain of youth at the end of the third film, I know it really doesn't fit with the name of the new movie but maybe thats what is going to be about.

Both "Swann" and "Turner" won't be in it, but Sparrow and Barbossa will

I would go see it. I don't really see the point in making it other then trying to make it just as good as the first one. The first and second where kind of okay. A lot of random stuff that didn't make sense happened in them.

Even though the third one was overcooked, I really loved the first two. So long as the film has Jack and Barbossa, and a ghost-story theme, I'll love it.

Haven't heard that anywhere. I don't know why they would drop the lead title, that is where the recognizability and branding comes from.

Also, due to a supporter and friend of Depp's 'stepping down' from his position at Disney, apparently he's a little less enthused when it comes to the films now. So the future of the franchise past (and maybe even including) this one is a little more foggy.

As detailed in The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean, the proposed story for the fourth film was for Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Barbossa to meet up in the newly founded New Orleans, before they sail to find the Fountain of Youth together.[17] Johnny Depp signed on to return in September 2008,[18] and Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio began writing under the guidance of producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The film is set for release on July 8th, 2011.[19]

Geoffrey Rush has confirmed that he will be returning as Barbossa.[20] Keira Knightley has stated that she wants to continue playing Elizabeth Swann. Orlando Bloom has also stated that he will return.[citation needed]

In June 2009, Bruckheimer stated Disney would prefer the fourth installment of Pirates be released before The Lone Ranger film, which he, Depp, Elliott and Rossio had been working on for release on July 8th,2011. He also hoped Verbinski would return to direct after his BioShock adaptation had been put on hold.[21]

At San Diego Comic-Con 2009, Bruckheimer stated he intends to begin filming in April and May 2010.[22] Rob Marshall entered negotiations to direct in August 2009.[23] Hollywood Elsewhere announced a possible steampunk flair in the fourth installment.[24]

On September 11, 2009, at the D23 convention, the title was announced as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with Johnny Depp in full Jack Sparrow make-up.[25]

In September 2009, Dick Cook, Chairman of Walt Disney Studio Entertainment, resigned after working for Disney for over 38 years.[26] The circumstances of his resignation are unknown, but most speculate he resigned due to his conflicting business tactics with CEO Bob Iger. Iger sought out "new ways of doing business", while Cook remained a traditionalist.[27] After Cook's resignation, Johnny Depp's faith in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has somewhat shaken, with Depp explaining that "There’s a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment. It was all born in that office".
