mulholland drive

So I recently saw this at a special screening in the theaters.

This movie immediately jumped up to one of my favorite movies of all time.

The characters are intriguing, the plot is insane, and some of the scenes weep poetry.

Did you guys like it?

Favorite scenes?

Have any theories or explanations?

I'll start off by sharing my favorite scene:

The one where the girl lovers go to the theatre show and the girl on stage starts singing for like 5 minutes then collapses and dies but the voice keeps on singing. beautiful scene.

Mulholland Drive? Seriously? It's just a giant cluster**** written to give neo-Freudian philosophers something to write about. That's the one with the creepy guy with the camera, right? Or was that Lost Highway? David Lynch's movies all kind of run together for me.

was probably lost highway. not this one.

and the cinematography was well done I thought, as well as the character metamorphosis.

It sounds like your not a fan of the post-modernism movement.

I don't really know what Freud has to do with it at all unless you are talking about the 2 minute lesbian scene.

But to each his own.

I really liked it.

*edit*

and I have yet to see Dune, but I read the books and enjoyed them.

Re: mulholland drive

Wait, was this the one where the blond girl turned out to be poor instead of rich in the last few minutes?

Either way, Lynch's movies have everything to do with Freud, because they're all about the characters' fears and sexual desires being twisted out onto the world around them.

I'm hip to the post-modern jive. When I could speak the jargon, I really understood it, but it's been a while since I was that into it. But that doesn't mean there aren't better ways to write post-modern stories. Watchmen is one. So's House of Leaves. And hell, you could get into Umberto Eco or Jorge Luis Borges for some lighter post-modern writing.

Compared to any other post-modern storyteller I've seen, David Lynch just seems too slapped-together. I'll grant that he's technically great, but good filmmaking does not pardon bad storytelling.

err there was a blond girl, but she's an aspiring movie star and she gets cast in this role and she meats this brunette with amnesia. there's a mob involved that takes over the movie from the director and an obvious reference to pandora's box with the blue box scene. also an unforgettable lesbian scene or two.

wasn't house of leaves originally internet literature? I can't remember, but I never read it regardless.

The trouble with post-modernism is that anything goes really, which sometimes includes negligible storytelling and being heavily reliant on symbolism.
