Your honest opinion of twilight...

The question in this thread is aimed mostly at my fellow males.

So lately all the twilight hype has started to get to me,When I first heard of twilight I marked it off as emo because of the title. Upon hearing annoying nerdy girls gush about how hot Edward is my opinion of twilight did not improve. But as with many things, the consistent annoyance has opened my mind a little. So I ask you males: Is twilight all it's cracked up to be? Or is it a stereotypical romance novel about a nerdy girl and a handsome vampire?

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

Why are we talking about novels in the Movie section? The movie is awful, the book is just as bad in some respects. There's really no need to be rabidly against it, some girls get into books through low quality stuff before they can explore other stuff you know?

Book or movie? That'll direct where this thread is going to go, and will also change my response.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

I've been a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan for years, so when I first heard of Twilight I was immediately dissapointed that someone was ripping that off, or at least moderately ripping it off. The movie was not a good one and was almost laughingly bad. I've never read the books however, so I can't judge there, but my honest opinion is that Buffy is and always will be better than Twilight.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

The fans are kinda getting on my nerves, some of them have hurt people who don't like it.

I've never liked Twilight, and yes I have read it. Maybe it's not my kinda of thing, I don't know. It doesn't keep me interested.

And no, Edward doesn't dazzle me.

I'm glad you posted that! I read some of the stories on there... the story about Emily (the one who went into the girl's room and cut her with the scissors) was disturbing and I'm sure that's not the only case like that. I'm bothered yet not surprised by the things they will do in defence of their mophead Edward. I've read all four books (yes. Even the last one, which is worse than anyone could imagine) and I don't like Twilight. The first book was bearable enough that it leads you to think the series has a shred of promise, but the rest of them just get worse until the last one, which is... I can't even describe how dull and predictable it was. Luckily, I have never seen the movie, and I don't ever plan on it.

Other than having vampires and romance within the same story, I don't really see how Twilight is ripping anything off, other than the sexualized version of vampires that have existed pretty much since Dracula was published (maybe even before).

As for my opinion of the franchise. Hm.

I haven't read the books, so I can't comment too heavily on them. Based on some excerpts, I can say they are written not dissimilarly to a lot of internet fanfiction and whatnot. Which is kind of surprising to see in books that made it through the publishing process. But that's only based of the little snippits I've seen here and there.

Based off of other things I've read about the book series on various sites and heard from various people who have read the books, they also contain some themes, messages and ideas that I find pretty objectionable in terms of what I believe. The way gender roles are assigned and how relationships are portrayed are probably the biggest things.

As for the movie, I saw it and well...you know it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. The romance parts of it were groan-worthy, to be sure, but there were some legitimately enjoyable parts to it.

I haven't had many, if any, interactions with the ravenous fans of the series that supposedly exist, so I can't comment on that aspect of the fandom.

Also, this video is awesome.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

never read the books, saw the movie on a date and it was absolutely dreadful. They are just horrible excuses for vampires. And I know its supposed to be a love story, and its a crappy one at that. I found it all very boring and unoriginal. The only part I found entertaining is the final fight. Not to mention sparkling vampires. And Edward is ****ing ugly, and a pedophile.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

Trailer for twilight came on in the previews for harry potter in the theatre. I raised my finger high in salute to its ****asticness.

The books are way to popular for what they are, and that is crap.

That is my honest opinion.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

To be completely honest, it's a horrible fad which will hopefully be forgotten. Out of all of my friends, I've only know one guy who's made an effort to read all four books(and that was only so he could get a little somethingsomething when picking up girls).

It seems like people needed another franchise to try out once the Harry Potter books were done, and picked the first one they could find. I think Stephen King hit the nail in the head when he said something to the effect of " Harry Potter is at least well written, Stephanie Meyer can't write worth a damn". This man is has written more classics than most, if not all, living authors today, so he definately knows what he is talking about.

I even know people who LIKE Twilight and say it's poorly written. What does that tell you about the franchise(and society for that matter). I do have to say though, the new trailer doesn't look as bad as the last movie. Granted, it doesn't necessarily look GOOD, but the directing and (some of) the acting looks better than the previous movie.

And also, doesn't any of the fangirls realize that the Twilight franchise rides on Robert Pattinson being a good looking guy. I can guarantee the books/movies would not be as talked about if they had some other guy portray Edward Cullen. You never saw the newer Harry Potter movies ride on the fact that Dan Radcliffe's, Rupert Grint's and Emma Watson's good looks. It's also a shame because Robert Pattinson really did look like a promising actor when he portrayed Cedric in Goblet of Fire. Now that he's cashed in on his reputation as a vampire in a lame vampire romance series, it will take a lot to get him to become a more respecatble actor.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

Twilight is a horrendous piece of literature. I really can't elaborate on that much. I read the first Twilight book thinking I would love it since every other girl my age did, and it was so difficult to get through it. The plot is poorly developed, cliché, and the characters are extremely uninteresting. The only interesting parts of the novel are the very beginning and the very end.

I don't even care about the fans, let them have their fun. I just need to spill it here that the novel is awful. Also, I have no desire to see the movie since
1) I don't like the book.
2) I personally think Kristin Stewart is an awful actress.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

The books were enjoyable but not something I'd consider "awesome" or "good" for that matter. One thing that made me laugh though is the fact that the character of Bella is described almost exactly in Meyer's image.

The movie was very short. Despite it being over 2 hours, it goes by way too fast. And they cut out a lot of stuff.

I'm just a bit mad at the Twihards. They overreact at the smallest, lamest things.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

I never read the series or saw the movie, but there's a lot of fan girls at my school who are obssed with the Edward and personly don't look smart enough to read and to me the Warrior series is so much better.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

Yes, I most whole-heartedly agree, the movieSUCKS.The acting is bad, the animation SUCKS, AGAIN. It looked like they were superman and I was in the movie theater, thinking"What the &%$# ! This was done half @$$!" and it was. The books on the other hand, I found to be enjoyable, not because how they all gushed over edward or anything like that (Ugggh, God Forbid) but because of the message it sent out. I was raised as a gentleman and that book showed really how to treat your girlfriend. I've seen kids in my school have hit their girlfriends and that's not right. I liked the message this series sent out and that's it. Yes, I did think the books were sucky but I read on because of that message.

Re: Your honest opinion of twilight...

I only saw the movie, never read the books. My gf dragged me to the movie.

In my honest opinion, the movie was alright. Considering I had no idea what it was about, besides the whole vampire thing.

It wasn't great, and it wasn't horrendous. It was alright.

Last November was probably the best time to be single. All of my friends who had/has a girlfriend has been dragged to see Twilight whether in theatres or on DVD, lmao.

Yeah breaking into and watching your girlfriend sleep or that making it seem like they are helpless and or always get into trouble, and don't forget the whole using other people as a means to pry into their minds, is also good ways to treat your girlfriend.

Though probably not as bad as actually hitting the book, but still.

Book: Never read the novels, so I can't say.

Movie: Even if I haven't read the books, I found the movie completely horrible. I felt no chemistry between the two main leads and the action segments seemed more cheesy to me than anything.
