This movie looks intresting, a film about aliens which doubles as a social commentary. |

Re: District 9
See this actually looks pretty intriguing to me, but it looks like it'll have an overall message of "immigration isn't so bad!" Then the aliens start getting violent.

Re: District 9
Sadly, I imagine this will be what we do when we do make first public contact with aliens.

Anyway, all the pre-buzz from the people who viewed this movie at Comic Con indicates that this will probably be the second best sci fi film of the year at least. The film holds a 100% on RT based on 10 reviews. Also, this movie isn't really based on Immigration, but on the real life events that took place in District 6. So it's actually about racial discrimination, or in this case, species discrimination. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_Six,_Cape_Town

Re: District 9
Saw the film on Friday. Here's my review:
![]() Plot Synopsis: ”Aliens become refugees in South Africa where they are kept isolated from any human contact. While being contained in the refuge being ignored of their welfare, their weapons become the sole interest of Multi-National United (MNU). But only one man, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), can activate these weapons. He becomes hunted for and only one place can give him refuge, District 9.” I wasn’t expecting a whole lot out of District 9, to be honest. The trailers looked alright, and the premise sounded fascinating, to put it simply. Besides, I’ve always been interested in what director Neill Blomkamp has been up to, ever since I initially heard about his now long abandoned Halo adaptation. Having just seen the film, though, District 9 is not only perhaps my favorite movie of the year so far (challenged only by Coraline and Up), but one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen. ![]() Arguably the most surprising thing about this film is its budget; the movie cost approximately $30 million to make, yet looks as though it cost $100 million. The folks at Weta Workshop, as expected, did a truly exceptional job with the animation. All of the aliens (or Prawns) are given so much expressiveness, and in very subtle ways, too. In fact, I often forgot that I was watching a computer-animated character, which I think is the highest compliment that you can give to an animator. The highlight of this movie, though, is Sharlto Copley’s portrayal of our main protagonist, Wikus. Throughout the first 30-45 minutes of the film, he’s viewed as a relatively unlikable character, yet becomes increasingly sympathetic as the film continues. It’s done so in an extremely compelling, extremely real, way, which is refreshing to see in a film. It’s this character and his relationship with the aliens that give these already incredible action sequences (that look as though they were inspired by sections of Halo and Half-Life) some genuine weight. I found myself tearing up a couple of times, actually, fearing for the safety of one of the characters, and rarely does a film manage to get that kind of response out of me. District 9 is an original, thought-provoking masterpiece that shows how a system can force its citizens to be unwanted, without becoming preachy on the subject. I’ll have to see it again, but I think that this film may actually dethrone Coraline (which is virtually tied with Up) as my favorite movie of the year so far, which is also to say that it’s one my top ten favorite movies of all time. 10/10 |

QFT
This movie was amazing. The aliens (As Rare Addict said) were so believable. They felt like something I could meet. Their tech was awesome. The mech's movement was beautiful. (Only 11 post?... wait... only 1. The others were made before it was out. FFFFFFFF. POST MORE IN THIS TOPIC.)

Movie of the ♥♥♥♥ing year. No, ♥♥♥♥ that. Movie, album and game of the year. Hands down, the best $10 you will spend in your entire life. This is the first movie that I've actually wanted to see a second time right after coming out of it. Quote:

I haven't been following this movie at all. Most movies about aliens bore me.

Re: District 9
I really want to see this movie; unfortunately, I have no car (Rather, no license). Maybe I'll get one of my friends to give me a ride.
That's silly.

Wikus was a great protagonist simply because he was written in a very original manner. Unlike most sci-fi heros, he was not a cliche. He was one of the MNU buttholes trying to remove the aliens and yet, he becomes more aware of what really is going on. The Nigerians were interesting. I thought it pretty realistic to have a sort of crime ring attributed to the aliens. Also ickle Prawn for the win! that little dude was adorable and a hero unto himself! The movie did not have a cliched ending and that is kinda rare in the genre. It had an open-ended ending that made you think "what if there was a sequel? What if Christopher came back and him and Wikus led a war against the humans?" Neat idea!!!
