Books that must be adapted.

What are some books that you think must be adapted to a movie?

The Alchemyst
Michael Scott

It's a new book, but it's amazing. It'sn one of the best books I've ecer read.

Torquemeda
Victor Hugo

Due to the popularity of Les Miserables, this could be adapted into a musical about the Inquisition.

The Epic of Gilhamesh
Unknown, perhaps dozens of storytellers.

It's amazing, about all the stuff in this. There are zombies, demons, dragons, battles. The title epic is aptly named.

What books do you think should be adapted?

Re: Books that must be adapted.

The Dark Tower - It would have been crazy for anyone to have tried to adapt this series when it first began. But thanks to the last decade of escalating movie violence, we as a moviegoing people have finally reached that point where even Stephen King's darkest, bloodiest and most over the top scenes would barely phase us. This needs to happen. Preferably while Clint Eastwood is still alive. That man is Roland.

Re: Books that must be adapted.

1984. Yes, I know that there is already a film version of this book, but it's an old film, and not many have heard of it. This needs to be done with today's technology. It would be nothing short of fantastic in the right hands (I'm thinking the Coen Brothers, personally).

Re: Books that must be adapted.

I'm very tempted to say the Mistborn trilogy, but I'm not sure if they'd translate well into film or not.

The books have lots of, uh, "visually stunning" scenes. the action sequences, say, would be breathtaking if done right, the dances and similar could also transfer over very well.

The political intrigue would be harder, as would most of the introspection. Especially since the heroine is very much a loner who doesn't talk too much, but thinks a lot.

But still, the sight of the battles on a movie screen would be amazing.

Snow Crash could make an excellent action movie, but you'd have to cut out all of the deeper research and a huge chunk of the extraneous world-building that Mr. Stephenson wrote, which means that the movie wouldn't be too similar (though it would be ludicrously awesome.)

Re: Books that must be adapted.

I think they should make an Animal Farm movie. It's an amazing book, and there have been two apparently bad adaptations, both which have a different ending than that of the book.

A documentary version of the God delusion. Though, Dawkins has already made enough athiestic media.

How is it that these two books (Animal Farm, and 1984 that I mentioned earlier) which are both amazing in their own right, and both authored by the same person, have had previous adaptations that were considerably lacking, when great films are being made out of Harry Potter, which is a popular fad at best? It really makes no sense to me.

Re: Books that must be adapted.

Animal Farm was in fact made into an animated movie. although some things were a tad watered-down, the general idea was still there. It would be cool to see a new version.

Yes.

I heard that the production rights were picked up, but I don't know if anything will become of them. We can always hope, though, right?

Re: Books that must be adapted.

The Catcher in the Rye: There have apparently been several attempts at making this excellent novel into a book. None were successful however.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Apparently the author has been working on a screenplay since late 2005... hope to see it soon.

Life of Pi: One of the most unique books I've ever read, there have been rumors about a film, there are several theatrical adaptations though...

And when exactly are we getting that elusive Hobbit?

2011. And last I'd heard, it would actually be split into two films.

The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks

Good book. Reminded me a lot of The Lord of the Rings. Could probably be a pretty good movie. I want Johnny Depp cast as Menion Leah.

They've also done The Color of Magic, Soul Music, The Wyrd Sisters, and Welcome to the Discworld. Maybe one or two more. I dunno.
