Seriously, I've not read the books, nor do I think I'd care for them at all, but this hatedom is absolutely ludicrous, especially since I doubt most posters here have read any of them either.

OH COME ON. If you have a view you don't have to be tolerant of people with different views just to look like a nice guy, because all you're doing is giving them validity by respecting their view, which gives them some confidence in thinking that you don't have conviction in your own argument. You don't need the moral high ground to win an argument.

I would gladly buy the books, just to read them thoroughly, JUST so I can have some basis to my critique, but that would mean having to give Stephanie Meyer, a member of the Mormon church which funded Proposition 8, money, which would mean that I would be indirectly funding Proposition 8 by buying her fiction. Fortunately I was able to avoid this by looking regularly over the shoulder of someone I know who was reading one of them in the pub for whatever reason, and what I did read did not only confirm what I'd heard about the badness of the "supernatural high school" plot, but bad writing ability generally. You may be writing FOR fourteen year olds, but that is no excuse to be writing LIKE one.

I read the books, and the ony reason most people hate them because they aren't literary masterpieces or on par with Tolkien's work. They're mediocre books that don't deserve the adoration or hate they get.

It's generally not the fiction itself that is hated, but the fandom. The books wouldn't attract so much hate if it wasn't held up as a literary masterpiece to begin with.

Yes. Note, however, that I did not say I hate the writing. I did however say I hate people for holding it up as a literary masterpiece. Because it isn't. It's far from a literary masterpiece. Therefore there is nothing contradictory in my statements.
