It's been a very long time since Hollywood has spawned a truly fresh and entertaining straight up horror film. Usually we get **** that should have stayed in the 80's, stupid slasher flicks that have a PG-13 ratings slapped on them and targeted at stupid tweens to make a quick buck. I mean, when was the last time that a movie actually raised your emotions to the point of fear, or even kept you entertained? I feared that the days of movies like Alien,The Thing, Halloween, Poltergeist, and Rosemary's Baby were long gone. Intelligent, well written horror seemed dead.
Then I saw this movie.
*WARNING: SPOILER ALERT*
Synopsis:Its Halloween in a suburban town that takes the tradition very seriously. Here we follow a principal who has a few skeletons in his back yard, A 22 year old women that seems to be trying to lose her virginity, A old man who is hiding more than he is letting on, a group of tween trick or treaters and a small and innocent little child that wanders from place to place. Things go from bad to worse as the night goes on, as each one of these people get much more than they bargained for.
Review: The movie starts with a few awesome establishing shots in the vein of Halloween, and it sets the pace for the film very well. That being said, that camera work for the film was very well done, and the editing is very tight, none of the scenes really drag on like a Friday the 13th movie. Throughout the movie little several tie ins such as items, little film shots, and secondary characters give the film a very tight and coherent feeling. However, all of this would just make this film a above average affair, without one very important thing. This film has so many twists, it gives the Twilight Zone a run for its money. I mean, nothing in this film is as it seems. However, I have one complaint, the twist for the Old Hermit story and the Tween trick or treaters is not as dynamic as I would want it, but it still wasn't bad. Another mild complaint that I have it the acting is not as tight as the other elements in the film, but this is entirely forgivable. One thing that I forgot to mention, the special effects. There is one major shot of CGI in the movie, the rest is animatronics and puppetry. It give the movie a very real and convincing look over most modern day horror movies. Think of the special effects in The Howling, and you have a general idea of the look and feel.
Just to rap it up, go and rent or buy this movie. It's a shame that this movie was never released in movie theaters as I would have loved to see it on the big screen. In fact, this film sat on a shelf since 2007 so we are pretty lucky to have even seen this film released.
9 out of 10 "What a Twists!"
