Re: A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Eventhough the movie was based off of the short story "Super-Toys Last All Summer Long" (which I didn't know at the time), I just clearly saw many comparisons with another (well known) story: Pinocchio (which is even mentioned in the film).
David is a robot that acts like a boy. Pinocchio is a puppet that acts like a boy. David's best friend is Teddy, the animatronic teddy-bear that takes upon himself the responsibility of David's well being. Pinocchio's best friend is Jiminy Cricket, a talking cricket that acts as Pinocchio's conscience. David goes to Rouge City to find the Blue Fairy. Pinocchio goes to Pleasure Island to find the Blue Fairy. David submerges into the ocean to meet the Blue Fairy, gets trapped under a ferris wheel, and stops functioning (aka: dies) after a few millenia. Pinocchio dives into the ocean to save his father from the whale, but dies after the process. After 2000 years a bunch of aliens reanimate David in order to learn more about humans. After about 2 minutes, the Blue Fairy thinks Pinocchio deserves his wish to be granted and becomes a real boy. David gets 24 hours to live with his mother (hmmm after 2000 years, I honestly thought intelligent beings would have been able to perfect the cloning process...but it seems they have also figured out a way to live for a minute amount of time even after one has died, so props to them either way). Pinocchio gets a "Happily Ever After" with Gipetto(sp?) But hey, if you like movies that are losely based off of well known literature, then you may like the Lion King (Hamlet), 10 Things I Hate About You (Taming the Shrew), The West Side Story (Romeo & Juliet), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Homer's Odyssey). -BGS
