U.S.A soccer ?

What do you guys think about how soccer has grown alot in the past years in the U.S, For example the U.S national team has won several goldcups and wil participate in the FIFA confederations cup next month against rivals like Italy Brazil and Spain etc.

Also in the Concacaf region are now pretty much even with archenemy Mexico and they have qualified for the last world cups with no problems.

Another Important factor is that there is alotof U.S players playing in Europe, This has contributed with there succes.

Discuss your opinion.

America sucks at football (That's the proper name, yanks), and that is a fact.

America is not the best team out there but they play nice organized soccer and compared to past years they have grown SO much!!

The MLS is inverting on big players !! Basically what im trying to say that I am suprised how much soccer has grown in the U.S and they actually are a good team, they dont suck ...they can compete at all levels and give the best teams a really good fight.

Most Americans don't like soccer in the first place, myself included.

There is a long way to go before the US mens team can call those teams a rival. Italy and Brazil both took very easy victories over the US in conf. cup, and you should just be happy not to have met a Spain that has 15 straight wins =)

To be frankly honest with you, that is not a challenge at the moment, since Sven-Göran Eriksson drove that team to the bottom and then change the manager in the middle of the qualifiers.

There are some, heres a list. And there will be more, but for the moment there aren't many playing for top teams.

I suppose you mean that there are big names coming to the MLS? Well, Becks did all in his powers to leave the MLS and stay in Milan since he didn't want his career to be over. Ljungberg was a big player, but if you can't even cut it in the hammers, well it was back to his old motherclub or to squeeze some more money out of his career. Not a bad player, just finished.

Absolutely, and I'm sure the sport will continue to grow, and when it do catch on the US will become a great football nation, hopefully not to big so you draw resources away from Europe though

But on the womens side however you already are one of the greatest football-nations in the world, if not the greatest.

Re: U.S.A soccer ?

America's never been too far behind in the world football stage, it's just because it's not a big deal for the country that casts them as outsiders against every other nation.

Confederations Cup Stats

The biggest, most major aspect in football that the American club owners have is money. They've been dipping into Europe to try and coax the most renowned players over the pond to promote football. Why not? I would never suggest that money can buy immediate success (Chelsea, Manchester City, Heart of Midlothian :p ) but if it can draw big players to a foreign nation then it's only a matter of time.

America would stuff Scotland any day of the week, and that is just depressing.

I used to think so too, but then I saw the 2002 World Cup Quarter Final between the USA and Germany, and the Yanks RAN RINGS around the Germans. They were utterly robbed in that game: it was the most disgraceful, intentional, malicious handball I've ever seen (apart from the Hand of God), and he should have immediately been sent off. Kahn was the only thing that kept Germany in that World Cup, and they never deserved to be in the final that year. Of course, neither did Brazil (Rivaldo's ham acting in the Semi Final against Turkey was also disgraceful), but that's beside the point.

The USA have potential.

Re: U.S.A soccer ?

I think the USA showed their credentials tonight with an emphatic win over Spain - who are arguably the best team in the world at the moment.

Definitely a team on the rise, and could become a major force in the coming years.

Re: U.S.A soccer ?

Yeah, that was a big shock for most of us. I gotta say that I'm very impressed by the spirit the americans showed last night. I've never seen Howard be on top for so long, even though he punched at least one ball straight out into the box. Bocanegra and Onyewu did some really good interceptions, I loved how they both sacrificed themselves every time Spain had a shot. It was their finest moment.

But, and not to take anything away from U.S.A, Spain was the only team on the pitch for 60-70 minutes of the match. The US had no offense whatsoever in the second half, and the second goal was a gigantic mistake from Ramos, which I always thought was a good player. A whole lot of luck and spirit took the americans through to the final. And don't forget that this is a team that has won one game in the tournament and got through to the semi thanks to Brazils thrashing of the world-champions.

It's gonna be fun to see if they can keep the luck and spirit up against Brazil, if we don't see another shock and South-Africa joins U.S.A. in the final. It's gonna be even more fun to see if they can get through the groupstage in the world-cup, and of course, if Reina still will be the best goalie in Liverpool when the season kicks of

Re: U.S.A soccer ?

MJ died to embody the US team with his spirit and groove. We can't lose to ****ty Brazil and their crazy on field tricks and goal celebrations.

EDIT: USA UP 2-0 AT HALFTIME.

Re: U.S.A soccer ?

USA had a pretty good game, they capitalized on Brazils poor performance in the first half, but when they came out in the second and played at their normal level USA had no chance whatsoever. Keep at it, in 10-20 years you may become a team to compete in the world cup for real.
