Re: Lord of the Rings Books Discussion Thread

I love LOTRs and have read the books a few times now.
I also liked the movies... but I'm miffed they did not include certain scenes from the books.

Re: Lord of the Rings Books Discussion Thread

I recently finished the Trilogy. I'm geniunly amazed. I've tried to read them before, but never quite mangaed it, but since I've grown older, and more mature I've found myself appreciating the genium of Tolkien so much more. I plan to get The Similarion for Christmas. I really want to read more Tolkien, as the guy is clearly a genius. When I read the book, the descriptions are so vivid, I can see it perfectly in my mind. The story is complex, and the language often gets to the point where it infuriates you, but as a work of fiction, it's one of the most perfect things I've ever read. On equal standing with His Dark Materials and The Batrimaus Trilogy.

I've read the Hobbit in the past too, but I might have to pick it up again.

Re: Lord of the Rings Books Discussion Thread

When I first read them, I couldn't stand the Fellowship, especially since I picked it up after seeing the movie. It was slow, it was timid, and it was so much of a slave to the little details that I just dropped it and went on to the second book. I'm surprised I got as far as the Council of Elrond, before my patience broke.

Re: Lord of the Rings Books Discussion Thread

The books were written over 50 years ago, so art of writing has changed. Tolkien was always a big fan of endless description (which helped when they made the movies), and sometimes he will go off on a tangent. But I do love and admire all his books. I suggest to those who are just picking up any of Tolkiens works to start out with the Hobbit. It sets the stage for the Lord of the Rings, and is written a bit simpler, as it started as a bedtime story for his children and was meant to be a children's book.
