Re: Book
I hated that book so damn much.
If you want to get back into reading find things you'd enjoy then progress to depressing deep crap (like of mice and men) at your own pace. Twilight or Eragon would be easy books for someone wanting to get into reading again especially within fiction/fantasy. ETA I misread the first post. You're not into novels? erm then read fan fiction if your not into novels or an encyclopedia . . .

Re: Book
Read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. It's a memoir, so it doesn't really fall into either category you said you didn't like. It's one of the most engaging things I've ever read.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burguess Atonement by Ian McEwan The Catcher in the Rye by J D Salinger. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. did yami say that? yes. and I am saying it again. AMAZING BOOK, DAMMIT. The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Might be a chick book. still awesome. Breakfast of Champions bu Kurt Vonnegut. Favourite. Book. Ever. more when I think of them. |

Eragon is terrible. It's cliché, unoriginal and filled to the brim with purple prose. I'm guessing you missed the point of Of Mice and Men, probably one of the greatest novellas of the last 100 years. It's a tragic story, yes, but it represents the American Dream and what can go wrong with it. The name of the book comes from a poem by Robert Burns, quoted 'The best-laid plans of mice and men/often go awry', obviously in reference to the American Dream, and thus, the events of the book take place. Oh, I also add 1984 by George Orwell to the list of books worth reading.

Re: Book
I read it, I got the message and I just hated it. I hated the characters all seemed dull, the plot was tedious.
I suggested Eragon and Twilight because I misread the first post. As far as Eragon goes, I wouldn't call it a cliché, the story was original and the writing style was very dynamic keeping focus where as of mice and men bored me to sleep, which was great when I was an insomniac.

Re: Book
Eragon is only a good book if you're a fan of cutout, one-sided characters, purple prose, anachronisms, overvaried dialogue tags, overly-simplistic languages, overused archetypical story lines, mary-sues, purple prose, unoriginal settings, plot devices, countless elements derrived from contemporary fantasy, purple prose, LotF fanboyism, purple prose, recycled fantasy races, purple prose, exposatory lumping, purple prose and, uh, purple prose.

Re: Book
Not to start a flame war but if Eragon is as 2d and riddled with all that purple prose you all speak of, then why was it a number one new york times best seller? It obviously did something right.

Re: Book
Well, for one, its overhyped due to the fact he is a young writer, it got adapted to a movie (a rather crap one at that), which would in turn get people to read more of the book due to the attention, and well, it has DRAGONS.

Re: Book
I've never read them myself, but the novelisations of the Ghostbusters films would probably be to your taste.
Also, listen to Lly and Yami. Do not listen to Liquid Fire, unless you're a huge fan of the fantasy genre, in which case eragon will be a merely decent read. That is all.
