Baseball Sucks

Not only is the game unfair (salary is not evenly divided among the teams--this might explain why the Milwaukee Brewers haven't been to the playoffs since 1982, while the New York Yankees are in contention for the World Series every single year), and not only because the games are boring as hell to watch (especially since there are 162 of them per year) either.

ESPN - Mitchell report: Baseball slow to react to players' steroid use - MLB

I am baffled that such a large organization could allow such a problem to run so rampant. Widespread steroid and HGH use has tainted the game beyond repair. None of the records have any sort of integrity. Why they did not institute random drug testing a decade ago is beyond me.

Barry Bonds, the most influential batter of our time (possibly ever), and Roger Clemens, the most influential pitcher, have both been linked to steroid use. So has Andy Petite, Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi and a myriad of other players. Which such pervasive corruption, practically none of the records mean anything!

If I was a fan of the sport or even found it remotely enjoyable (to watch--playing is another matter), I'd be devastated. But, as it stands, I sit back and laugh at the joke that is the MLB. To me, it's never been anything more than crap that interrupts football highlights anyway. Indeed, football has undoubtedly usurped baseball as "America's Pastime."

I've been to three Major League Baseball games in my life. The second and third times I fell asleep in the stands. The first time we were in a box for some reason, and there was a tv in there that was on a channel showing the game we were watching. I changed it to Looney Tunes.

Nothing puts me to sleep faster than watching the sport. I used to like to just play with my brother pitching to me and just knocking tennis balls out of our backyard when I was a kid though. Watching it on TV or even in the stadium has always been boring to me though.

Me too. I'd even prefer golf.

My dad and I went to a Brewer game a couple of years back and we couldn't even make it through the third inning. It's just too slow.

Yeah, baseball is as boring as hell.`And it's called "America's Favorite Pastime". That's probably because the US is really the only country that gives a damn about the sport. I come from England, and until I moved here, baseball was unknown to me. I remember all the kids talking about it and me not having a clue what they were talking about. I've been dragged to several games. God, it was booooooooooooooorrrrriiiiiing! I fell asleep after the first inning... or I would have if those hooligans hadn't been screaming loud enough to be heard from Pluto!

From my understanding, the Japanese like their baseball aswell.

Anyways, I aint gonna lie, professional sports almost all suck. I'd prefer to just play rather than watch.

The Arizona Diamondbacks had a salary of $50M but had the most wins the NL. The Rockies had a salary of $54M and they won the NL pennant. The Cleveland Indians had a salary of $61M and they were tied with the Red Sox ($143M salary) for wins in the AL. The Padres had a salary of $58M and they missed the playoffs by one game. I could go on.

The reason these teams have won with little is a farm system. By drafting players from high school or college and signing players from Latin America (many teams have facilities in Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and other countries. Plus there are Cubans who defect to America), teams have been able to develop young talent that is under their financial control for years.

The number of games is more a strength than a weakness. It keeps ticket prices significantly lower than many other sports. The greatest thing about baseball is anything can happen on any day. If you're not a fan, you'd never understand.

Are you a football fan? If you are, you should know that football players are just as guilty, if not more so, than baseball players of using these drugs. What has football done?

Also, much of the issue was the player's union which is powerful and was against drug testing for years.

Barry Bonds is the most influential batter ever, Babe Ruth is (he saved baseball. His power was unmatched at the time and it made the media put the Black Sox scandal on the backburner). While there are players who juice, they are a minority. Most players who just are fringe players, guys who need an edge to stay on the roster. They are not setting or breaking any hallowed records.

Are fans of basketball or football devastated when they see Pacman Jones get arrested? Or Michael Vick go to jail? Kobe Bryant charged with rape? Or any of the dozens of players in these sports who get in trouble? I doubt it. I'm a member of a baseball forum, and no one is devastated at these allegations from the Mitchell report. Most of the players in it were suspected of it anyway.

Football gets enough attention during the winter. The playoffs are starting when baseball is.

Wrong. A past time is not determined by what is popular right now. Baseball is America's past time. It is the first American sport created. The only places where football is more popular is mostly in the midwest where many colleges have very good football programs. Baseball's popularity is more concentrated in large cities.

Actually Baseball is the most fair sport out there right now. No clock and everyone has the same opportunities. Now as for steroid use, I agree with you, the organization should've done what the NFL has. Seeing as they are pretty good about it. I also find it a little boring...but still it's Americas past time, although that is quickly becoming football isn't it? (YAY)

The past time isn't what the most popular sport at the time is. Football has been more popular than baseball since the late-60's but baseball is still considered the national past time.

I agree, baseball is BS. It's boring to watch, boring to play, and it's unfair. The teams with the most money always win. How did it get so popular?!?!?

Eh, baseball isn't really my choice of sport, but it can be fun when it isn't...not fun. o_o

I prefer football, myself.

Give me a break. Any LB, Dline or Oline player could kick any baseball player's ass. Even if they're juiced.

You're an idiot if you think Baseball involves more contact or violence than football.

Why is this whole "steroid use" such a big deal? Don't some people realize that if you're injured, and you take steroids while being injured, it helps you heal faster? Sure, most players don't do that, but if you ask me, that's enough to overlook the whole thing altogether. I think the fact that some teams have higher salaries than others is MUCH more unfair than taking steroids.

On the side note, baseball is boring. Why everyone in my family takes it so seriously is beyond me. And then, there's my sister's boyfriend, who's a red sox fan, and the rest of my family, who's a yankee fan that conflict with each other over stupid stuff. OH YEAH! WELL WE WON 26 WORLD SERIES! OH YEAH! WELL WE ARE THE BETTER TEAM RIGHT NOW CUZ WE JUST WON! My god. Grow up. That may have been a little offtopic at the problem I had, but I found it appropriate for this topic since it is about baseball afterall.

Sports in general are stupid. I mean, I understand the point of playing them; that actually involves some fun. Watching them, on the other hand, is just...dumb. Why would I spend precious hours of my life watching other people play a game? Exactly. Also, I don't understand why they get paid so much money anyway. People take sports way too seriously.

Has anyone been ever killed during a football game?

First of all, steroids are illegal in the United States. Second, Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is used to heal injuries. However, it's real use is for people who have growth problems, not middle-age men hoping to heal quicker. Steroids and HGH are used to enhance performance (hence the term performance-enhancing drugs, or PEDs). Unlike football and other sports, baseball's history is very important. Anyone who uses PEDs is cheating. When someone like Barry Bonds does it, it's seen as a negative because he's tarnishing a record many people hold sacred.

It isn't. It's only boring if you don't understand it.

I always said it's more fun to actually play the sport than watch it.

I'd put Baseball on the same level as Nascar. Baseball is just some dude hitting a ball or striking out and running in a diamond. Sure, someone can do a dive and just barely catch the ball or miss it. Sure, some people can fall and get hurt.

At least Nascar can have some pretty descent crashings. Someone getting hurt in Baseball is as boring as watching paint dry. Unless it's some unlikely situation where someone manages to throw the ball through is skull.

I've been to a few games (not major, just teams from around the region) and I'm usually sick of it around the 6th inning and leave.

I'd prefer playing basketball in school as opposed to Volleyball or Soccer. But for watching, I'd say Football. People get knocked over left and right, and sometimes you get these amazing dodges and flips and touchdowns.

The closest I'll ever get to enjoying Baseball would be playing that Mario game that's Baseball. That had some cool **** in it.

But closing, one side won't win. This is an opinion VS opinion thread.

But that still doesn't change the fact that Baseball sucks.
