Let's talk Superheroes
Recently I've become a big comic fan, so I've been reading up on all kinds of DC and Marvel Superheroes. To say the least I'm pretty surprised at how much I've enjoyed it so far, since in the past I absolutely detested anything even similar to the Avengers, X-Men etc.
I guess getting rid of my anime obsession might've had something to do with it. Nonetheless, I still hate the old days of comics like from the 60s and 70s where things were unbearably cheesy, but just about anything from the 80s and on I can stand. I especially like the more serious approach that Superheroes have taken since 2000, specifically Marvel's stuff. So then, let's get some discussion going; who's your favorite superhero? Villain? What's your favorite publishing company? Who would win between Gladiator and World War Hulk? What's your favorite series? Will Sentry ever grow a pair? Say anything! |

Re: Let's talk Superheroes
I'm a big Marvel fan. I've gone into DC from time to time, but Marvel is where most of my regular reading goes. I'm mostly an X-Men fan, because I really like the wide variety of characters, and the whole metaphor they represent.
I don't like to pick favourites, because really there are just too many. I guess you could say I like pretty much all of them. My favourite series right now...probably either New X-Men or Astonishing X-Men...or Runaways. Though that latter two don't get released as often as I'd like, but I can forgive because Joss Whedon is writing both of them and he's a genius. I'm also liking the New Warriors and Avengers: The Initiative these days.

Re: Let's talk Superheroes
Indeed I have. I've read Deadly Genesis, which introduced him, as well as The Rise and Fall of the Shi'Ar Empire, and the current Emperor Vulcan miniseries. I quite enjoy it, and like how we're getting to see Havok take the helm of a team over Cyclops, since Cyclops gets enough glory as it is.

Re: Let's talk Superheroes
I've been a Marvel guy all my life, and DC is only living up because of Batman. Unlike those cheesy superheroes that are "aal that" with their superpowers and all, Batman simply uses what most of us have: intelligence. He's mortal, which relates to us all, and I think he's the best DC hero out there. Besides, who can resist his villans?
Marvel has a unique range of superheroes, mainly X-Men, Spider-man, and such. I've always grown with Spidey when it aaaaaalll started with this. It was the most open, had many other guests from the Marvel Universe, AND it was Aerosmith that helped with the theme song: YouTube - Spider-Man TV Intro Then there's everyone's favourite merc with a mouth, Deadpool. I didn't know him too well in the animated series, being a shame he only appeared briefly: http://youtube.com/watch?v=a5dKsxQkzIE I eventually read the comics, and he was so much like I am and we relate in insanity. I still question who would win: Joker or Deadpool? X-Men was a good series to start off with as well. It was so good it made the funniest internet dub ever (strong language applies) YouTube - The Juggernaut Joker has also been a character related to me before getting to know Deadpool. His insanity and tasteless humor was what I liked about him. I loved watching Batman: tAS back then (and trying to get the DVDs) and LOVED Mark Hamill's performance as the Clown Prince of Crime, especially his infamous laugh, shown here: YouTube - Joker Laugh Scenes Jack Nicholson was also amazing in the classic Tim Burton movie itself. Here's a good clip of the Joker (not in "make-up") YouTube - Joker - Jack Nicholson Overall: Favourite Marvel Hero: Spider-man Favourite Marvel Villain/Anti-Hero: Deadpool Favourite DC Hero: Batman Favourite DC Villain/Anti-Hero: "Teh" Joker (you can tell from my siggy, can't ya?)

Re: Let's talk Superheroes
I don't really have the money to get into comic books by Mavel or DC. Especially after I factor in that I'm already collection Simpsons and Futurama and The Phantom (The Australian Frew Editions of course). My Dad's work though did get given a few from newsagents for free (sans covers due to what the small business owner had to do to obtain a refund on unsold stock) Deadpool is laugh out loud funny but what I was really getting into was Spider-girl. It does read very similar to the aspects that made early spider-man great but of course with that touch of added realism we have post eighties. May Parker Daughter of Peter and Mary Jane tries to balance her various responsiblities which includes super heroing. The issues I was reading before moving basically had a plotline about a disk that used to belong to the Kingpin and May trying to keep it out of the hobgoblins hands. I whish they still had the covers though because that series sure has some good ones. The character of May also reminds me of some girls that I knew back in high school so it sometimes makes me a bit nostaligic.
