2006 Winter Olympics - Torino

Discussion for the 2006 Olympics. Who do you favour? What are some favourite Winter Olympic Sports? Who will go home with the gold?

I think the Italy-Norway rivalry in Mens skiing will be interesting, not to mention very competitive. I'm looking forward to seeing Canada in hockey, they'll turn out well. Being a native to the U.S, I favour them, but I do want Finland and the U.K. to do well.

I enjoy downhill skiing and the luge most out of the Olympic sports, but I also like hockey. Very fun to watch. What are your thoughts?

Re: 2006 Winter Olympics - Torino

Well as for the medal standings, I think it's going to be a close one between the Germans, Americans, and Norwegians, just like the last Olympics. Hopefully the U.S. can pull ahead in the medal standings over Germany, but then again there are plenty of Austrains to take metals for themselves in the skiing competitions. All in all it is going to be exciting to see which country comes out on top.

I love snowboarding. Well, watching it at least. I can't snowboard... I ski. It's amazing how fast some of these people go.

Did you all know that Shaun White (currently thought to win gold in snowboarding) has like... 4 mansions? He's 19. And he's uber-rich.

I watched the opening ceremony today. The tree people were odd. I was making fun of the ceremony with my sister's friend's brother. XD The thing I did like, though, was the skaters in pink with flames coming out of their helmets.

Yeah, the "Flying Tomato" has millions of dollars. He's really good too.

What I really want to see is Bode Miller. Many people close to him suspect that his confession to skiing with a hangover wasn't true and it was made up so Bode could prove the U.S. media only prints the bad stuff.

I hope Germany does well, but I kind of want Norway to win this year, or at least get silvers'.

Opening ceremonies were very interesting.
I love the Olympics! International brotherhood, real or supposed, mingling with mind-numbingly difficult athletic feats!
Everybody's fairly sportsmanlike during it, too (usually...).

A good point, but it wasn't a very professional thing to do either way (and on national television! Egads!).
I'm actually a bit sick of Bode Miller; I've been watching NBC and they can't seem to pull the camera away from his face for ten seconds. It kind of reminds me of last year, with all the brouhaha over Sasha Cohen (and then Sarah Hughes swoops in for the gold! POW!).

Yahoo! Olympic Time!
Who saw the Canada vs Italy Women's hockey today? 16 - 0. BRUTAL.
Opening game the hosts got embarrased.

Well, definite statement. Canada's got one gold medal already.

Re: 2006 Winter Olympics - Torino

Whoa, that Chad Hedrick is really fast! And to think he started only three years ago...

I think Michelle Kwan needs to be taken out. She got in without even trying to qualify. How do you think the person she replaced feels? She's has a little too big of an ego if you ask me.

EDIT: Yay! She dropped out!

Man, Bode Miller came in 5th... he shouldn't have changed to the old skiis... Even Daron did bad. And Apollo didn't win! What upsets! Oh well, at least Shaun White passed on his second try...

The U.S. still has a chance in the other events, too, though.

*cheers* Did you all see Elena Hight, the 16 year old snowboarder? That amazes me. Now I'm really rooting for her.

I dunno why, but I love the snowboarding event. Yet... I ski. :0

Shaun White... wasn't he supposed to be like the best? Why was he doing so horribly?

Don't worry I'm a hardcore skier and I'm loving the boarding events too.

As for the Tomato, ah only the first run is what killed him, after that he was practically untouchable. I mean yesterday he had to runs for the finals, but he didn't even need the second one, the first one gave him the gold, so the second was a victory lap of sorts.

Re: 2006 Winter Olympics - Torino

Well... What were his two scores? I didn't get to see mens. Curse my symptoms of not-knowing-when-the-olympics-are-on. XP

But wait... if he did badly in the first run, how could it have given him gold?

I'm confused.

You get two qualifying runs, the first run he was landing a trip and wasn't paying attention so he lost his balanced when landing, sort of crashing. Second qualifying run he to the highest score out of all so he moved on to the final tweleve. In the finals you also get two runs, but he score was so high on the first of his two final round runs that his second run was unnecessary, he had already won gold with the score on the first, so after he offically won, he used his second run down the pipe as a victory lap. Hope that explains it for you.

If you didn't see it it is kind of hard to understand unless explained, so don't worry.

Re: 2006 Winter Olympics - Torino

yay, Australia has a gold in Moguls, the second gold medal we have actually earnt in the history of winter olympics. I say this to the Candian press about the fact he immigrated here from there...though titties you wouldn't let him play because he had working commitments. So he found a country that would let him work first practice later. Your just jealous because he has a gold medal and is a millionare and wanted to downplay his win out of respect to the other competitors as he was just happy to be there the medals secondary to him really. I saw the tomatos runs in the finals I can honestly say he definetly earned that gold medals, great to watch. He also earnt a new nick name from the Australian contingent, he is now called blue, do to his red hair. Its an Aussie thing.

As for my favourite sport it has to be either the skeleton because going down an ice slide head first, thats nuts, or the Bialthlon. It's cross country Skiing but with guns.

Re: 2006 Winter Olympics - Torino

Did you see the pair skating? You should have.
Great Olympic spirit
I take my cap off to the chinese pair. Man, that girl has some guts skating on her foot after that fall. It was inspiring.

Also, (even though I'm American) I'm glad Johnny Weir didn't win the men's skate. His girly costumes scared me, and I don't much like him. I was very happy with the standings, as I liked all of the winners. They seem like great guys, who really did deserve to win.

I feel sorry for Lindsey Jacobellis. She was soooo close. It must be extra hard to know she would have won if she hadn't been showing off. Pity, really.

Yeah, so I've been following the Olympics extremely closely this year.

Re: 2006 Winter Olympics - Torino

So far, the U.S. is pretty good medal-wise.

U.S:

Gold:7
Silver:4
Bronze:2
Total:13

Germany:

Gold:6
Silver:6
Bronze:3
Total:15

Norway:

Gold:2
Silver:7
Bronze:7
Total:16

(In order from who has the most Golds')

While Norway has the most, they also have only 2 Gold medals, so, technically (in my mind) they're 3rd. I count how many Golds' a country has, not total medals, but, whatever.

I saw Lindsey and I have no sympathy for her. I mean, she was showing off and clearly saw all the people behind her (even if it was only one). It was just a stupid move on her part.
