Calvin and Hobbes

Bill Waterson

It is my belief that Calvin and Hobbes is the best comic ever created. Not only does it look really good, but it is really funny, as well! I've found many refrences to life in Calvin and Hobbes, and if you've read it, you probably have too.

This thread is to discuss the comic. NO spam. Do NOT say, "I luv that cmic, its gud." Give constuctive opinion, please.

So, if you're unfamiliar with this comic, get familiar. Here's a site with lots of the comics, neatly arranged by topic (although a little poor quality EDIT: Also, some of the links don't work, and many are repeats. Sheesh!)

Without a doubt. This cartoon is my favorite. I'm not sure why, but it cracks me up!

Feel free to discuss anything Calvin and Hobbes related.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

Recently, Calvin and Hobbes has been added to my paper. It may not be really funny, but it has that childish wisdom to it and plus, the art work is pretty good. Definitly a good news comic.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

I really like the comic, though I didn't discover it until years after it ended. But I think I have close to every book that they've come out with, except the lazy sunday book, and one of the collaborative ones... although lots of them I have lost.

But yes, a very spiffy comic overall.

Definately true. But I also think it appeals to older audiences as well.

Appealing to parents:
Mother's relate
Father's relate

And I definately want to do this sometimes. What kid doesn't?

I don't know when I first saw it... but I like it right away. It's funny, but when I first read the cartoons, I didn't get some of them. Now I do. I must have learned something in the past few years...

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

I love Calvin & Hobbes. It's so funny you brought that up today because I totally forgot that I had a big book of C&H comics and I just found it while I was cleaning out my bookshelf and I read a couple comics.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

Definately one of the funniest comics I've ever read. I own "Revenge of the Baby Sat" and the one about the mutant killer monster snow goons, I think my favorite strip shows a bunch of pictures of Calvin making wierd faces and then it shows the parents saying, "This will remind us of more than we want it to." I think I'm going to go buy a few more of these, they are better than the average bathroom reading... like you keep sitting there for 45 minutes because the comedy is so good.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

Big fan of Bill Waterson's writing and artwork in Calvin & Hobbes. A six year old boy who can play a game of 23-base football or wax philosophical with his stuffed tiger, how can it not be good? I have the Lazy Sunday Scrapbook (which contains the comic Cal linked to in the first post) and enjoy reading and rereading it several times a year. I can't think of what my favourite one could be, there's been so many chosing just one would be impossible.

I love this comic! I have a few books, I'll have to check the titles. My favorite would be the one where Calvin makes snowmen in front of his dad's car. One of them looks like it's been run over and the others are crowded around staring in horror. It's just classic. Great comic, great artist. I love Bill Waterson

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

I love Calvin & Hobbes. I've been reading it since I was about 7 years old and it appeals to me beacuse it doesnt have to be smutty to be funny. So much American humour focuses on the 'in your face' humour but C&H doesn't have to.

One of my favorites, because it's both funny and philosophical. And the basic idea is also great, as well as the art style. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about it.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

It's one of the most, if not the most layered Sunday strip ever made. I think that says enough about it.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

The way some of the posts were worded triggered something in me to realize this. It's like all the philosophy's Calvin has are things we think of when we are kids, that idealistic, innocent, and untainted way of thinking; Waterson just words it incredibly well and shows the humor in it. He also shows how that attitude in children makes them a bit wiser (sometimes) than their parents. Children haven't become a slave to routine and monotony the way adults have and that's why Calvin has such a great imagination and can make things fun and see the raw logic behind something showing how stupid it really is... man that's an awesome comic. To quote Calvin, "nothing ruins fun like finding out it builds character."

As soon as I get home I'm going to read some Calvin and Hobbes.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

I was one of the greatest comics that existed (next to the Far Side, and Liberty Meadows). It could be deep, it could be silly, it could just be hilarious. I don't really agree with the creator's own opinions, but I loved the cartoon.

And it was one of the first strips to introduce me to cartooning in the first place, which is an area I'd like to pursue a career in in the future.

It really can make you think sometimes. It's just sad Bil stopped making it after just a few years of it running. And then people started illegally making images of Calvin doing obscene things. It's sad.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

I dont know what quite got me into reading that series... I dont even remember how I found out about it. But I have been reading them for about five years now, (long after it ended) Bill Waterson really hit the nail in uncovering alot of the secrets of life and was able to put them on paper in a innocent, yet comical satire way. Calvin and Hobbes is pure class.

My first comic I read was somthing to do with his oatmeal eating him. Of course, many kids are able to realate to this I am sure:

But one I remember vividly was a comic that started out with a huge close up pannel shot of a dead bird. Stuck in my mind as probably one of the most serious tone ones.

The Dark Side pretty much took what else I would say outa my mouth. And those are some of the reasons why I actually like Calvin and Hobbes better than my second favorite as Garfield. Not to mention, it was what motivated me into becoming a cartoonist, or somthing relating to that feild. I draw for my highschool newspaper occasionally.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

Side note: Website with little graphics from Calvin.

War topic: This comic seems a little cute at first. But when you examine it, the deeper meaning jumps out. War really is a dumb thing for anyone to do, isn't it? I'm not saying you don't have a reason, just that there shouldn't be a reason in the first place. So many people die...

I also came across these various "life" comics.

I looked for an image of that one, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Here are the words, though:

Calvin: "Look, a dead bird!"
Hobbes: "It must've hit a window."
Calvin: "Isn't it beautiful? It's so delicate. Sighhh... once it's too late, you appreciate what a miracle life is. You realize that nature is ruthless and our existence is very fragile, temporary, and precious. But to go on with your daily affairs, you can't really think about that... which is probably why everyone takes the world for granted and why we act so thoughtlessly. It's very confusing. I suppose it will all make sense when we grow up."
Hobbes: "No doubt."
(then they watch the birds flying)

I love to read that comic, and then just think. Try it, it helps any day.

Re: Calvin and Hobbes

C&H is the greatest comic of all time. Although sometimes the comic is a little to "gruesome" for my mom (she's a total orthadox christian), I read it whenever I get the chance. My favorite: the one with the snowman house of horrors *laughs maniacly*
