Heyyyy yah, laddie!
Wah, it seems you caught the adoption thingy anyway even though I edited it out of my welcoming post for you xD
Hum, hokay - first things first!
"newbies" is just the term used to address/describe those who are new to the forums. Not to be mistaken for it's meant-to-offend cousin "n00b". The former just means someone new to the place (like in your case =D) while the latter means an ignorant cringe-worthy clueless newb. Other derivatives for the latter include n00blet, nub, nubcake etc etc (but this isn;t just with
ZU - it's standard terminology on boards across the nets ^-^)
As for adoption ( *laughs* xD)
wait - before that - a great wee guide to pore over would be: The Newbie's Guide to the Universe
here's the extract from it about Adoption:
Quote:
Adoption: It seems that the 'thing' these days for newbies is to get 'adopted' by a veteran member of the forums. So, I might as well explain it as best I can. "Adoption" basically entails putting a little note about it in your signature, and making friends with your adopter.
The point of adoption is to make a quick friend at ZU, as well as someone who you can turn to in order to ask newbie like questions, or anything else for that matter.
Getting adopted is not in any way mandatory. It is entirely voluntary. I don't personally see a point to it, since, as you can see by viewing my signature that I don't have a newbie of my own.

Tadaa! xD
so, basically, a newbie usually goes to
Adoption Central and "advertise" that they are interested in having an adopter. Veterans and adopters check the thread and, if they like the sound of someone, they ask newbie-in-question if they mind being adopted by them. If both are happy - yay! you are not adoptee and adopted! :>>>>
and that's all there is to it :>
