I realize that. I'm just glad that you've acknowledged that racism exists for both western and non western foreigners in Japan. My only concern was that I felt you were disregarding racism towards westerners because Japanese supposedly adore them, and that's not always the case.

Hope you don't mind me responding to your post here. I just didn't want to derail Powershot's thread of his experiences in Japan with my own.

You're right, it is a rare case that things like that are said in Japan, but I changed my mind about that opinion when it happened to me three times in the first two months. It's passive, and it's not just directed towards black people (my host mom has let me know time and again that she "hates" chinese people and will refuse a Chinese exchange student if she was given one), but it still happens. It's just think it's a bit myopic to glaze over actual instances of it with the majority clause.

Kaspar, I hope that you don't mind me using an avatar that's very similar to one of your previous ones.

If anything, I gave credit in my signature.

I grew up eating Korean food; but when I go to Japanese restaurants, I don't notice that big of a difference (other than the degree of flavor).

    *shrug*

Then again, I tend to see similarities rather than differences. But that's just me.

Compared to the popularity of Japanese food -- yes, it is. Although, I guess under appreciated would have been a better word to use.
I've only had Japanese food at restaurants, but as far as I can tell, it's not that much different from Korean food. They have different dishes, yeah, but the biggest difference I can tell is that Korean specialty dishes usually have a lot stronger flavor (sweet, spicy, sour) than the Japanese ones.

As an example, miso soup is a lot less pungent than deng jang soup (I could write this is Korean, but I'm not sure about an english spelling).
