I think in GIMP they named it the blend tool.
Just pick the colors you want to gradient. Put one in the foreground color box, and the other in the background color box. Then just use the blend tool by dragging it from the bottom of the canvas to the top.

I'm wondering how to put a gradient on without using a paintbrush, because you can see all the ugly strokes. (By background I meant background of an image, not background as in laptop background.)

Like you mean make a canvas the size of your desktop in GIMP and just put a gradient on it, save it and use it?
