Granted I suppose you could read just the Tyrion chapters and consider that a book in of itself, but you'd be missing out on A LOT of plot devices that are happening throughout the Westeros world. The Tyrion and Arya chapters are my favorite ones in the series, but they are my favorite because of the characters, the situations are are in, and comparison to the others.

Personally, I say ruin your viewing experience by reading the books. Take it from someone who has read all five books and saw both seasons, the books are better (they always are). You get a lot more character development through the books. The tv series will end by around 2022, so you have a lot of time to consider when to read the books.

I will say this, the first season is pretty good when it comes to the book, however the second season is when the writers took some liberty in changing a few things (nothing drastic, just, underplayed).

Alright, something like 10% of their leaders actually believe what they're saying, but the rest don't.

And that's actually a real stat (extrapolated a bit) from actual studies! Out of people who want to be social dominators, 10% of them are also right-wing authoritarians. The rest pretty much all say that lying to get power is perfectly acceptable and that their personal philosophy is that it's not wrong unless you get caught!

Your assumption that they actually believe the nonsense they're selling is probably misplaced.
