So, all in all, TMC connects well to the FS subseries (FSS) and to TWW, but not to any other games so far. That's why I strongly believe TMC was always supposed to serve as a bridge connecting TWW to the FSS, and was always supposed to come between those games. And the FSS, on its turn, is a great bridge linking TWW to Lttp, mainly because of FSA, which explains how Ganon came back after TWW and was sealed in the DW.

As for AoL Zelda, I really doubt it is the OoT one. The original japanese quotes never imply that she was the first Zelda ever, just that she was the one who stated the tradition that all princesses born in the royal family would be called such. IMO, that is supposed to refer to a princess zelda that didn't appear in any game so far, having been born between OoX and LoZ.

Also, the greatest argument for TMC to come after TWW is the language used. It is clearly New Hylian (from TWW) and not Old Hylian (from OoT). And the language is actually storyline-important, as TWW makes sure to imply that the language only changed because of the flood. LttP also mentions a dying language, connecting to TWW in a way.

Also, please notice that TWW actually gives that the shield was made to resemble the Hylian Shield used by the Hero of Time in the legends. It is pretty easy to imagine that other normal shields were also made like that, and the TMC shield could easily be one of those.

As for TMC coming before TWW, I find it really doubtful. The developers made sure to add a lot of implications to that game that it should come together with FS and FSA. Neither the backstory or the ending has any links to Ganon or OoT's story, so I find it unlikely to be a direct sequel to OoT. In TWW we can clearly see that the SW story survived for some time until the game happened.

Using the shields as timeline indicators isn't a good idea. The shields are similar in design because the art style from both games is the same. They have different names. In TWW, we have the "Hero's Shield", while in TMC it was called "Small Shield". None of them is actually given any important backstory that would relate both shields. They just used the same design in TMC because they were using the very same art style from TWW.
