Just out of interest, if you became President and could pass any law you wanted without Congress blocking it, how would you change the way the armed forces are structured?

Probably due to the fact that so many people have a kneejerk anti-military reaction to anything on the topic.

When I was in the Cadets (long time ago, I left cos most of the people there were utter dickwads), one of the Sergeants used to be a Drill Instructer at Sandhurst (the officer training school), and he would tell stories about how dumb the trainee officers were. One guy pointed a loaded gun at him [the sergeant] by accident on the handgun range, as it had jammed and he turned around to ask the sergeant what to do.

And to think, you have to get higher education to even get in to Sandhurst. I don't believe it sometimes.

At least you are American. Even though buying officers comissions was abolished in the 1870s in Britain, many officers are still related to the aristocracy. With the very stereotypical upper class accents, "I say old chap" and whatnot.

    Just listen to the accents.

Of course, due to the sheer strength of the US military it is highly unlikely for something like that to happen. Hell, even 9/11 didn't do it. This is an extremely deep rooting problem and, while I am not sociologist, I think it probably stems from the rhetoric at the back end of the Cold War. The US population experienced extremely comfortable standards of living while the Soviet population was near starving, and after the collapse of the USSR it really helped vindicate the American exceptionalism idea. It is a sort of trickey area, but people living in western countries feel indestructable, and the near peaceful collapse of the USSR has led to an idea that we don't actually need miltiary force.

It is totally wrong, of course. Just ask someone in Hungary in 1956, or Czechoslovakia in 1968 about what life is like when you are at the mercy of a foreign power. Or hell, the Georgians in 2008 or the Ukranians today. Without the US military, it would be the United States at the mercy of foreign powers. Yet people cannot accept this, they just take their comfy lives for granted.

But for something to happen to shake up US society, that would mean the US military is not there to do its job, which isn't going to happen. Its a catch 22 I suppose; people are not going to be shaken from their complacency while the US military is still around, but the security provided by the US military means nothing of the sort will be allowed to happen anyway.

Because those sorts of people just don't understand, and they don't want to understand. To them, the military is some kind of boogyman going overseas to kill innocent babies in order to line the pockets of businessmen and politicians.

They take it for granted that they won't ever be cowering in their homes as Russian or Chinese paratroopers march through their streets. Millions of people all over the world are not so lucky, but people in the west live such comfortable lives BECAUSE we have the military force to defend ourselves. The people of Georgia or Ukraine do not have that luxury.

That sounds pretty great. I'm not sure you ever posted all of Drow, but I liked what I saw.

    Is the Titans dead, then?

Snowden is the worst, in my opinion. The internet regards him as the second coming of Christ, but he is perhaps the biggest traitor in recent years. He claims to be all about free speech and human rights, then he goes and ❤❤❤❤s off to Russia and feeds US State secrets to FSB agents over lunch. People like him are not heroes, they are utter scum and deserve to be treated as such. Shooting is too good for him, he should at least be hanged.

No service myself, I'm just an amateur analyst. My father was part of BAOR in the '70s though, he had nothing but good things to say about the Germans when he was stationed there.

I think a big part of it is the real left wing, anti military bias that is so prevalent on the internet. Several members of this website have often said we should get rid of the entire military altogether, which says a lot about their understanding of such matters.

I fully agree with you too. It is a hundred years since the First World War, back then people like him would be shot without hesitation. A shame that doesn't happen today.
