I guess it can't read unicode... See, computers are built using a set of normal letters as a sort of base. It's limited, though, and therefor doesn't contain big 5 (Hanzi, Kanji, Hanja, Hangul, Kana, etc.) characters. So they use complex codes that can be summed up as a string of the simple letters, and somethings aren't compatable....
Either that, or the "translator" simply is a look-up tool for their code points (or whatever they are... haven't messed with this stuff in a while, you see).
