Oh, there's that too, yeah. That's another reason I liked both of them, they involved different forms of changing and ruling over the world (Battle Royale ties into my interest in dystopian fiction, whereas Death Note simply plays to my idealism I suppose). I read that in the Battle Royale novel it's basically a case where the government is actually using the issue of the BR Act to keep the public divided, so that they'll never all rise up against the government, rather than actually attempting to achieve anything by it, but I've yet to read it so far. Can't have gone too far wrong given that you did well either way

Obviously job satisfaction is far more important than just getting lots of money, but obviously there's nothing wrong with having both is there?

I like the overall style as well, since it's not trying to be overtly grim-dark in the manga at least and still succeeds in having that darker theme to it. And despite Light's defeat, at least he went down fighting instead of accepting his loss and admitting that to Near. What comparisons with Battle Royale are there? Both of them do deal with big "what-ifs" in relation to societies which aren't that different to our own and so will have a big impact on the viewer because of that, but I'm not sure if that's what you'd be focusing on in a media essay.

That's a good philosophy to work with, since it's much easier to study something if you're actually interested in it (hence my passion for law). As they say, if you pick a job you love, you'll never work a day in your life.

I found a clip of the final scene with Light on youtube, and it wasn't anywhere near as good I felt (since the whole twist with Ryuk is so much better if Light knows about it, and the way he just went nuts given that was brilliant to me). How did you work an essay around it?

Code Geass is basically Death Note in an alternate history with mecha, really, which is why I became interested in Death Note to begin with (and find it superior).

To say the least I absolutely love the way it ends. Though the second half isn't quite as good as the first half, the ending more than makes up for it. Definitely better than Code Geass' at least.
