But like you said, what works for Mario may not work for Zelda. Mario's dramatic changes were unnecessary, but Zelda needed those changes.

It wouldn't hurt if gameplay was mixed around a bit. To me, gameplay is the experience of playing the game.

As for new content, that goes without saying.

I'm just saying that things need to be taken from the past Zeldas, like the non-linearity of the first.

Controls can stay the same for all I care. I just need original gameplay that doesn't restrict me. One of the reasons I disliked TP was because of the lack of either.

I don't see how it applied to your comparison. If anything, Nintendo would have fared better if they hadn't abandoned 2D Mario.
