Programatic means the song is based on a story or visual picture that goes along with the music. It's like 1790's version of a music video, but words instead of vid.

Best example is Symphony Fantaistique, by Berlioz. Based on an opium trip he had.

it was just the norm I suppose. Programatic music wasn't the most widely composed Genre until probably post-stravinsky I would guess.

Some symphonies are attributed special names by either the composer or the historians. Ie: pastoral symphony, new world symphony, surprise symphony, etc......

yea he's pretty bad-ass. You should check out symphony#5 the last movement (4th movement I think). My favorites of him is piano trio#2 and his mid-late string quartets. and of course the cello concerto.
