No, Apple's fault.

However, converting with foobar is very easy (right click, click convert), I think you just need to download, say, LAME (for say, mp3) and dump it somewhere and not having to care about it more. Syncing is one thing mediamonkey > foobar at tbh, as I could sync in so many ways not even iTunes could with it, including auto convert all FLAC files to mp3 when transferring (while keeping the FLAC originals), auto playlists with 3218457328451732985732189573485 different parameters, et cetera.
Maybe it would be easier using iTunes with the sole purpose of syncing, unless you want to download another media program (mediamonkey) which I doubt you want.
And I think it's possible to solve the problem with "Beatles, The" too. It should be possible to make it display "The Beatles" but sort by "Beatles, The".
