No problem. I did play it up a bit in the post, but it is fun having discussions like this.

You can't really look at the Japanese culture and war effort from a western perspective. Japan was still several decades behind the west in industrialisation, and the old traditions still remained strong. To the Japanese, surrender was a despicable act and was considered a dishonour to your family, nation, and your race. As cliché as it sounds, executed prisoners of war was seen as doing them a favour, due to the dishonour they carried.

As such, Japanese POW camps where not very nice places. Nor was it very easy on the Chinese civilians living in areas Japan controlled in China.

Also ask Allied POWs about the Japanese opinion on surrendering. You might learn something.

Strategic bombing had never succeeded in winning a war anywhere. By the time the bombs where dropped, basically Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Osaka had not already been flattened by bombing. Strategic bombing could not have defeated Japan, Russia occupying Manchuria could not have caused them to surrender, and only physically occupying the entire country or wiping out a city or two with a single bomb could have broken their will to fight.


Japan was defeated by 1945, and they knew that. They would not have surrendered, however. Not without killing as many Americans as possible.
