Eh, we all have stuff we could learn. That's true even for someone like myself. As long as you're willing to improve your story and be open to criticism, that will set you apart from the crowd.

Having a plan helps for some people, but I find that it's better to just let the story write itself.

Yeah, when I think of a "fan artist", I think of someone who draws stuff. You're thinking of a fanfiction writer (which I'd have to say I am one, albeit one of the... crazier ones out there, as you can tell by my stories).
