Health care reform is just one issue in the mass myriad of political subjects, and hating Republicans just because of that is sill (although I’m sure (I hope!) that there are more reasons why you are so opposed to the conservatives). Although I personally think that we should reform the US health care system, there are reasons why some of the Republicans so staunchly oppose it.
Take for example Asian countries, such as Japan and Taiwan. They have a public health care system: in Japan, they have social insurance which citizens are required to get; Taiwan has a similar system. The government covers the bulk of the costs, while the citizens have a relatively small co-pay. The waits are basically nonexistent, and everyone gets health coverage.
Sound too good to be true? It is. In both of those countries, doctors’ offices, hospitals, and other medical places are facing serious debts because so little is being put into the actual health care. They are facing major deficits from it: I mean, Taiwan uses a mere 6% of its GDP (gross domestic product - the total amount that country gets from everything) on their health care, and that isn't enough to support everyone without facing debts. Of course, this could be solved by raising co-pays or premiums, but then people would grow angry...
Additionally, in other countries, such as Britain, they put more money into their health care systems, so they don't face the debt that other countries face. However, the people are then forced to wait for anything from an appointment about a cold to a surgery for a hip. Also, since in some countries the people pay nothing, you get people who take advantage of it by going to the doctor's office whenever possible, even when they aren't sick, just because they are lonely or are hypochondriacs.
I've just learned about health care in my economics class, so I like to think I know what I'm talking about. There are reasons why people are reluctant to change - otherwise, we would have already adopted a system similar to other countries' systems.
Not including health care reform, the Republicans have done a lot more that you’d think to help our economy. This is before your time, and even mine, but back in the 1980s Reagan saved the country from high inflation and high unemployment rates with his economic plan (Reaganomics anyone?). It was thanks to Reaganomics that many Americans (my own parents included) were able to get jobs.
And although he did in completely the wrong way, Bush (G. W.) did everything he did because he thought it would help the country. No Child Left Behind was created to help children learn more (although I will admit that it did basically the opposite). The Patriot Act was made with the intent of finding terrorists and protecting the citizens (again, as a libertarian I highly oppose of this act, yet I realize why he did it).
So really, you just have to look at both sides of the arguments and look past just the actions at the reasoning for the actions. It makes them more human and less like cold-hearted robots who are out to get anyone who wasn’t born with a trust fund.
(no, I’m not sorry this is so long. This doesn't necessarily answer your question, but rather it explains why they haven't done "anything" for health care reform.)
