The Meaning of Life

What is (in your opinion) the meaning of life?

I believe that the meaning of life is to try everything, so when you die, you will know that you have made the most of the time you have.

I also believe that you should be remembered, so when you die, part of you will live on, as a memory in the hearts of those you have influenced.

In all the that i have come to know, experience and feel...in my opinion the meaning of life is Love. Every person on earth lives to find it. Wars were fought over love, huge money spent on love, many have died or spent long years for love...cried and laughed all for love. Behind everything we do and behind the visage that is the earths system of things is love becasue love is what binds us or seperates us.

Oh...and some one is going to say this in this thread so it might as well be me

To me it is very simple: Don't worry, be happy!

However, is there really meaning to life universally at all. I guess meaning only exists in our own opinions. (The true meaning might not even exist, or be something like murder each other.)

I guess its what we would like to achieve in life and what we value ourselves. For some this is happiness, for some money, others maybe status, it all depends.

Have a nice day,

Sander K.

I believe that life is what you make of it. You're born, you live a while and then you die. However, there's a whole world out there for you to explore, to see things and learn something new everyday. Sometimes things go well, and sometimes they don't, but all in all, it's what you make of it.

While millions of still-born fetuses hit the ground with a thud, and millions more are ravaged by disease, it is some relief to know that his face will appear in home-made pies with alarming regularity.

these are not my words, but the words of a young and wise soul who understands the rythem of our lives:

"I believe the meaning of life is to live your purpose. And we all end up having purposes in life, because of all the things that happen on earth.

And all the things that happen on earth are for us to understand what we know, and live happily, and honorably."

There is no meaning, to exist is good enough. Why do we need a purpose?

Once again, a religious question.

If something with a conscious mind intentionally created us (ie God), then that is our meaning.

If not, we have no meaning/purpose.

I mean, the question is pretty empty if you take out the religious content. The meaning to life? What does that mean? I could ask you what the meaning of a sofa is and you would be just as able to answer that.

I dont think this had anything to do with religion.

If trying everything pleases you, do it. Not everybody is as enthusiastic about that and prefer to find one thing to live for, which is still great. I think one should live to the fullest. As far as that whole "living on as a memory," some people are quite content with their own happy lives. If you're time on Earth (in any form) is extended past your physical life, that's good but as long as you enjoy life, then it's not as big a deal.

Obviously it has something to do with religion. Though I would contend closer to "everything".

"Obviously?"

*sigh*
It just annoys me when people take a question that doesnt have to be related to religion, but make it so that it is.

Because if you don't have a purpose, if you're merely going through the motions and living for the sake of living, then you're wasting air. To exist isn't good enough. Humans need a reason to live. I know it sounds cynical, but why would you still go on living to simply live?
I'm not telling you to go commit suicide so please don't. Everyone has a purpose, and progression in life is the means to discover that purpose. You don't have to question it if you don't want to, but that doesn't mean that life is meaningless. At least, that's my opinion.

Religion ties very closely to philisophical views on the meaning of life.

The more you think about why we're here the more you realize life is pointless.

Then we put religion in and it gives life a nice kick.

See, if someone has religion it can very easily alter their meaning of life. (I just used Christianity because that's what I am.)

I don't really bother thinking about the point of life, it's more fun just to live life and be happy.

It's also about living for others. You can be greedy and selfish you're entire life, but without doing good for other people and doing it sincerely, there will be a hole, a part of your soul that's truly empty. I guarantee it.

I believe that we should try and gain a relationship with god and explore the vast and complex universe he has placed before us. I believe he wants us to explore the universe and learns its secrets. He definitly wants us to get to know him and all that, but I believe he might also want us to explore not just the planet, but the whole universe.

but thats just my personal belief...

You're born and then you die, you have the time in between to choose what to do. There's no meaning and it's your choice if you live it or not; most think it is.

In two words: Carpe Diem.

Life is what we make it, we can chose to sit around and just abrely exist, or take life for what it's got, enjoy life, and find happiness, weither that be through religion, or other means we need to make the most of what time we have, because that is all we have.

Gather ye rosebuds while you may
Old times are still a flying
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.

You never responded to my post's reasoning.

That is, someone in this very topic just made a very religious answer to the question, and I'm quite sure that many people would agree with it.

How is religion not related to it? It's sort of like saying the same for abortion, gay rights, etc. They are not initially about religion, no, but the fact that peoples' religious views can directly determine their answer, which I already proved is true in this case....clearly makes religion related to the question. So yeah, I found it rather obvious.

Though the sighing was a nice touch.

The meaning of a sofa is to provide its owner with comfort while they watch T.V., or whatever your sofa is in front of.

Plants, animals and humans all exist for one reason: to reproduce. That is the only constant found in every life-form. Everything is born, tries to survive, and then passes its seed on to another life-form. It sounds cold, but that's really all it is. Being more intelligent creatures, though, us humans like to romanticize life. In that sense, we all have separate and personal reasons for living, but in the broadest sense, I think it's really simple.

Being a believer of God, and believing that he gave us life, it is our responsibility to pay back to God the things he has given us.

Oh and exploring things in life isn't such a bad idea either.

It's cold alright, but that doesn't mean it's the truth. Maybe in the most literal, general sense. But for humans, I'd disagree. You just ignore that we're the smartest creatures on the planet, that we essentially have every resource on Earth at our command? You think it's the truth but I think you couldn't be more wrong. We've reached a point where we don't need to reproduce. Humans already rule the planet, and a legacy through your own offspring doesn't really do much out of six billion people. It doesn't do anything for you or them, especially if they grow up believing that they're as good as plants and are only meant to overpopulate the planet.

The meaning of life is to give your life meaning. At least as far as people go. We have more then any animal or plant does. No other creature attemptt to rationalize it's existance, and although you may think that that makes us foolish, in reality, it gives us the ability to make our lives by what we perceive and believe. It's what seperates us from animals, and by having this trait, we become more than this "common coincidence" that spawned each one of us. We can give our lives meaning.

It's not as simple as you say it is.
