Cursing
Now, this may or may not be serious enough for the I:SB, but I'm just wondering a few things.
Why exactly is cursing so bad? **** and **** are words, just like any other, yet they're taboo. I don't have a history of language, but I would honestly like to know who declared such words taboo, or how they came into existence. Now, I'm not saying that anyone should use these words frequently, or young children should use them. On a somewhat different note, is bitch a bad word because it insinuates that you are a female dog? :B (Gee, sure is word filter evading in here.) Cody's note: Not for long >:]

Re: Cursing
Umm, since the people who are going to be coming in here and arguing against you are the very people who don't want to see the swear-words in question, I refiltered them. <:

Re: Cursing
Cursing is really not a big deal.
It shouldn't be taboo, who cares if the little ones learn them curses, they'll learn it eventually anyways. I say cursing is taboo thanks to religion. Not everyone is religious.

Re: Cursing
It is kinda funny how when a little kid says 'poop' its cute(well not really, but people are usually fine with it) but when they pull out the Sh-- word everyone freaks out.
Honestly I just dislike it when people swear, its more annoying then anything. I really hate listening to conversations where every few words the speakers insert a swear word into the conversations. I mean if someone gets bad news and they say Sh-- or some other word to express that I really do not care. Its when it becomes overly used when it becomes annoying. But why is it taboo? I have no idea, I just think that people should refrain from saying such words and instead look for some better words. If you are bashing someone else its much more satisfying calling them something they do not know and force them to actually think. Or for me anyways ![]()

Re: Cursing
Why is it bad to curse?
(The following has curse and swear words) Because every mother ****ing time some god damn ***** of an ******* decides to ****ing curse or swear excessively it shows that they're a mother ****ing dumb ass piece of **** who doesn't know how to ****ing talk without succumbing to use ****ing curse words or swear words that just makes their ***** asses seem less ****ing intelligent. Swearing and cursing, to many, is a sign of unintelligence. It shows that they can't display their thoughts and emotions without using such a low form of language.

I'm not saying that I don't curse because I do. There has to be a little courtesy involved while around others though. Especially kids. ^_^

Re: Cursing
I think it's just a way of expressing your feelings. It's a good way for people to gauge the strength of your meaning. Swear words are used because of they way they're said, you can put lots of expression into them. Most of them have plosives, so you really put emphasis into them.
However I agree about young children not swearing - they probably won't always know when it is appropriate. I've always though it's really pointless when people write a swear word and blank out just the vowels or all but the first and last letter - you still mean the same word, and everyone still knows what it is, so why not just write it?

Re: Cursing
When something really, really bad happens, it's nice to have a set of really bad words to say. The more casual swearing, the more those words lose their meaning, and the less satisfying they are, and the less they help. Casual swearing/cursing makes it less fun.
Incidentally, swear words are not actually just regular words. They stimulate a specific part of the brain, (because they're taboo) and that's why tourette's sufferers involuntarily swear, rather than shouting "Cheese!" or "Playstation!".

Re: Cursing
Swearing should be used just like any other word in the English language (since we are referring to the English, **** and **** etc etc). In correct doses. When you use it too much it becomes obvious your effort to think of a more appropriate way to express your feelings is low. Swearing is like an 'extra' to the English language. You certainly don't need it, but it does provide you another element to express just how 'pissed off' or much you '****ing' love a subject. Children should NOT be taught how to swear. Why? They can certainly learn that stuff when they are older and have more understanding WHY to use it than just another pretty word that gets a reaction (they certainly do get a reaction from swearing) when they say it.
