Well done to those protesters who disrupted the Olympic flame yesterday!

They really put the point across to the Chinese - lets hope Tibet Ruins their olympics - they should never have gone to Beijing - perhaps this torch relay will show how much people feel about the foul Chinese treatment of Tibet

I saw it on the news earlier today. As pleased as I was to see some of the old British Bulldog spirit again that hadn't been utterly wiped out by the hideous Nu Labour regime, I can't help but feel slightly apathetic as China gets away with so much anyway considering it's despicable human rights record. I doubt that much will come of this apart from a few grumblings, considering China's growing economy and the fact that so many countries are coming to rely upon its cheap workforce and many items of produce that come from there.

Now what is this all about? Why do people have a problem with the Olympics being held in China? Or the Chinese? Give some facts before congratulating people for disrupting something like the Olympics.

You don't ditch the Olympic Games. They are a symbol of peace. Seriously, sports is one of the most powerful things that bind people from all over the world together, in a way that few other things can do. They all come together, old and young, friend and foe, to just sit down and enjoy the show.

Way back when, the greeks even had to temporarily stop their wars because of the Olympic Games so that they could all enjoy it. So why would we ruin it?

The greeks were damn right! The Olympic Games stand above politics, not below it. Even if you don't enjoy them, be happy about the fact that no piece conferance in the world can tie the masses together the way the Olympic Games can.

Stop ruining it. You can go protest against whatever you want but you damn well better leave the Games alone. They've done nothing to deserve this treatment.

both the chinese and the olympics - it gives the Chinese government a political platform to be exploited like Hitler exploited his Olympics in 1936 - all the leaders of the world will be there - eg Gordon Brown will be seen to be with the Chinese leadership - they will exploit it - it is too politically sensitive - America boycotted the Moskva Olympics in 1980 so why is the same not happening with Beijing?

Because politics is the worst reason to mess with the games.

Honestly, Communist Tibet's better then Tibet under the rule of of the traditional system. I'd hope to see a completely new government for all of China, though.

Protesting the Olympics is an interesting problem.

I mean, as people have pointed out, the purpose of the Olympics is to foster international bonhomie, but then there's the fact that China is terrible towards civil rights, and the Olympics make an ideal place to draw more attention to that.

It also raises the question if we should be trying to be friends with countries like China.

Personally, I'm going to have to say that the protests are fine, free speech means people can say things you don't like, and the Olympics are a perfectly legitimate way to gain more attention to your cause.

However, I am strongly opposed to the people who are trying to extinguish the torches, or attack the relay runners. The torch is an Olympic symbol, not a Chinese one.

As a Greek, I am deeply offended by this display against my heritage. For one thing, the Olympics are about unity, and everyone using them as a protest is an absolute disgrace. For another, the Olympics have nothing to do with Tibet. Why can't people understand what these games are about? Unity.

Geez. Even Spartans take the Olympics off!

Tibetan Buddhism has a worse track record then Roman Catholicism. If the Dalai Lama came back into power then he'd try to set up as much of the old system as he could.
