This thread was started partially in response to a general climate of censorship that is rapidly descending upon America, but more specifically with regards to the remarks made by Geraldine Ferraro about Barack Obama. A transcript of said remarks follows:

I don't care much for the above quote, but as for political correctness, I wish it could die. People should grow up and realize I'm not trying to insult someone every time I say something.

I think it was rather ****ed up of her to say that he's only where he is because he's half-Black. She was just pissed because she's backing the losing candidate; least that's how it seems to me.

But I'm not much of a fan of political correctness. However, I feel she got what she deserved. You can have freedom of speech, but don't act surprised by the consequences.

The above quote is probably true in certain parts of the United States, which is part of the problem with "political correctness": it changes between areas. The country is too big. Big-time government figures and people in the lime light need to curtail the things they say just so they can get by. It's unfair and ridiculous, but free speech is already almost gone. Other examples of "free speech" that have been lost are the campaigns against hate speech, or against religious prayer in public schools . . . though that one may be more under the umbrella of freedom of religion.

Political correct wording is just a way of saying, in politically correct terminology, that there is a list of words and phrases and ideals that cannot be used in public, lest they offend someone. In my mind, the fear of offensiveness is probably a bad thing. Half the time, the best lessons I learned from my parents, grandparents, friends, et cetera, were after I had been humiliated or offended. Political correctness is meant to take away the instances in which that kind of lesson can happen. For the most part, though, I think it is probably an accident of our culture (if we have one) that it exists.

Since everyone wants to blame someone else, they need a nice way to control communication so that no one accidentally admits blame in some vague way.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I'm far from politically correct when I debate things, because it's not my way of talking. I'd like to keep my own wordings (well, more or less of course), that's what makes people interesting: a personal way of expression.

I usually talk about how I dispice feminists, hate fundamentalists and think turks are pathetic... Now, obviously I do not discpice the principles of feminism, but rather the active political party in Sweden that is made of feminists. I dispice them, and all who have similar views. I don't hate every religious person or anyone who believes in the bible, but I hate it when people become blinded by their faith, and I wish that the people responsible for it would just go away and never come back. And I do not think everyone from Turkey is pathetic, but those kind of turks who do nothing but being annoying and no-good in any aspect whatsoever. And ever worse than them are the Swedes that wants to be like them. Idiots...

And so I clarify that once if I need to, then I go on and talk from my heart. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, because people hear what they want to hear. And people like being offended, it seems. Because that's what I keep hearing, how much I offend people. Yet I keep doing it for a greater cause: to get rid of the freakin taboo that shouldn't be there!

People are too scared about offending people, and people get offended too easily. It's just ridiculous. And there are even elements of reverse discrimination in society today, for example in the "battle" between Clinton and Obama. A lot of people seem to think that because they aren't white men that automatically means they'll bring about change.

The worst thing I find about political correctness is the sheer hypocrisy. If you tell a joke about a black man people call you a racist and you get done for hate crimes. Tell a joke about an Irish person, or a blond woman and people laugh.
It never fails to amuse me how stupid people can be.

Also, how some black people call each other nigger, but get offended when a white person uses the term even in a non offensive manner.

Edit: See that's what I'm talking about. I'm using the word "nigger" in a non offensive manner. It shouldn't be censored.

I don't really think people get offended easily, but they are just opportunists. If someone does something they don't like, targeted towards them, like a dog breeder not allowing them to buy a dog, they'll take advantage of whatever "minority" they belong to (homosexual, female, black, Middle Eastern, old, young, etc), and say that [person] did x to them "because they were [minority]."

People's frowning upon of Geraldine Ferraro's quote is ridiculous. Even though she might not be correct, it was certainly not offending in any way.

Yes, we still have free speech and will always have free speech. The goverment can't take that away from us. They won't have anyone to do their dirty work.

Unfortunately, political correctness was made by the voters. If the politicians didn't need it to avoid getting eaten alive on national news, they wouldn't be using it. All of those huddling masses really Want them to be politically correct, even if they don't know it.
