Similarities between Phantom Hourglass and Link's Awakening

Does anyone notice that PH is very similar to LA?

For examples, in both there is a giant benevolent whale, Link gets washed up on a beach, and the whole thing appears never to have happened in reality. (I don't know whether the Ghost Ship warped time in PH so that it appeared to the pirates that Link and Tetra were only gone for 10 minutes, or if it induced a vision in them. I think it's the former.) Both end with some cliche relic from the adventure. In LA it's the Wind Fish flying away, and in PH it's the S.S. Linebeck sailing away.

Any other connections? Do you think PH is the child of LA and WW, or do you think I dug too deep into it?

If you ask me, you're making connections that don't exist. Just because Link is in all games doesn't mean they are cheap knockoffs of eachother. Just because you and me post on ZU doesn't mean that we're the same person. Just because God and Satan are both connected to Christianity doesn't mean Satan is a good person, you satanist.

In conclusion, go take your completely incorrect views somewhere else, before I take them somewhere else for you.

This is why I hate religion people.

Also, I'd say although you are correct with these assumptions, they don't mean much. you can pretty much look at any two games and find binding similarities.

Chill out, ZackF. There are some similarities between LA and PH. But it may be that they are just reused ideas and such. Nothing really significant.

Which was my point. I guess I was kidding around too much.

Link's Awakening may have involved those same superficial details but there's a lot more they don't have in common.

True. In LA, for at least part of the time, you know it's a dream, and that's one of the most important and appealing things about that game. PH doesn't have anything like that-- it's just a "save ppl!11" sort of adventure, and they just hope you'll be impressed by the stylus control or whatever. However, I love Link's Awakening and its storyline.

I think the similarities between the two are not a coincidence. You do see that kind of nostalgia stuff in Zelda a lot.

Re: Similarities between Phantom Hourglass and Link's Awakening

I really didn't find them too similar. And I think the significance of knowing about the whole dream thing in LA is that you're not sure whether it's true or not until you beat the game, and you're thinking that, since it's Zelda, they wouldn't go so far as to make a whole island full of people cease to exist, but they do.

But I really didn't see any similarities between the two games. I did, however, find PH a bit similar to WW.

Re: Similarities between Phantom Hourglass and Link's Awakening

I agree in the same way I saw TP as a similar best of. The three most recent games seemed to be just that, recycled stuff, though all in very different ways.

I'm hoping for a new thing with ZWii and ST though We can hope.

Re: Similarities between Phantom Hourglass and Link's Awakening

It is not that similar. It's just a Zelda game thing. Someone gets in trouble, you need to help and there is someone saying where you need to go and there is always some greater thing giving advise to you. Ocean King, Deku tree, Owl, Sahasrahla, Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule (King of Red lions) or some others like Jabun, Valoo, King Zora and so forth.

In the end there is always the indication that things are OK again let it be the Windfish flying away, sages watching over the scenery from Death mountain, "The king returns" (ALttP) or all the happy people in Termina after you have helped them all. And what comes to the beach there are other games with near dead persons found in the beach area like Mikau that you afterwards transform into.

It's a game series and they have to have thing in common in them so be seen as a somewhat continuous legend even that there is no such thing as a time line that could fit all the games into it.

Re: Similarities between Phantom Hourglass and Link's Awakening

If you didn't think of the windfish the moment you saw the true form of the ocean king, you are braindead.

But yeah, the whole ending felt like a tribute to LA. I wouldn't say a "Knockoff." Now stop making me pray for the possibility of a DS LA remake.

Re: Similarities between Phantom Hourglass and Link's Awakening

The game wasn't much like LA at all...but the ending. Oh yes. I was so mad that they pulled such a repeat of LA's ending, but made it sucky-ish. D= LA's ending was amazing and fit the story, PH's was just like "Oh by the way, you should go back to your world now" and Tetra and Link are like "Wut?"
