New Fan Wallpaper Feedback

This thread is in regards to BrimstoneRed's new fan wallpaper. It is a critique of his work for the only reason of peer aid, but not in anyway to otherwise disrespect his work.

I love the concept, the work. The energy shining behind that of the Zelda logo, perfectly neutral for any game member of the franchise by advertising the series itself with a timeless transition. I like the whole composition in that sense, and it is very appealing.

The only things I see are faded colors, low quality levels, and restricted amount of resolutions available. The colors used seem to be faded out, as if the originals were lacking the contrast needed to help give the power and force the imagery's emotional intent is trying to grasp. This can be solved with the use of levels which I've taken a stab to in the attached images below.

The quality levels also seem low, which gives it that pixelated look instead of the crisp, smooth transitions. I am unfortunately unable to really do anything about that for example needs. The restriction of 800 and 1024's also hurts the potential but is also understandable given quality levels. 800 is already a dead breed of resolutions, with only the computers dating from 10 years back and older requiring them. 1024 is the new low standard, but even that is passing away. As such, the low resolutions will be very limiting in their appeal and use, which makes pandas sad D:

Anyways, I know the wallpaper is free, and that's always a given. However, from one graphic designer to another, feedback on work is one to at least take in acknowledgment. This is your work, your display of skill and effort. And thus, it's the same as drawing artists that draw for free, for themselves. It's to work on skill and to enjoy doing so.

As said, I do love the material and concept/intent illustrated in your work, I just feel some small things are holding it back from the greatness it really is. No one is perfect in the field, and I make my own mistakes many times.

Great job still

1st image is my revision, while the 2nd is the original overlayed on the top of the revision to show key differences.

Re: New Fan Wallpaper Feedback

Okay, just a few comments I guess, I've got time.

I suppose my main complaint is that it seems very lifeless. To me, it simply looks as though some pretty effects have been put on a canvas, and the Zelda logo has been slapped on in the center. It just doesn't work for me, it lacks the emotion, and thoughtfulness I like to see in wallpapers, and it just seems very bland, and to me, these things seriously pull back on the reigns.

The background needs to be more powerful. From what I gather, the concept is something along the lines of a "timeless franchise." Something that resists even the power of time, which in the end reduces everything to dust? There is your emotion, your message, now you need to show it to us.

All Derek's comments about quality and resolution are valid, I agree with them all. However I also think that it needs more of the 'wow' factor. Derek has helped by adding more contrast, between the emerald green, and the black, but it all seems too blended, and there need to be some parts which stand out. Colour can be a really powerful tool, it'd be great to see it used some more in this, because as it stands, it seems a little bland.

Re: New Fan Wallpaper Feedback

I'm sorry if I seem harsh - it's because I'm going to type as much as I can in a short time

First of all, the quality is very bad (very JPG'y). Secondly, it needs to be an actual good resolution. Third, the zelda logo doesn't fit there. Fourth, the outer glow doesn't work out. Fifth, I'd like it to actually have to something to do with Zelda. Sixth, the logo needs other colors.

Re: New Fan Wallpaper Feedback

The 1st one looks like it could be a title screen for an actual zelda game, but otherwise I like it; on another note it lacks some artistic flare that would give the image a new edge and perspective, different lighting or maybe a mix of renders would give the image an overall better appeal but not bad for a simple image.
