a question/idea/proposal

So, A newbie asked me today if we have a graphics showcase, (obviously, we do) but then it occurred to me that he probably meant to ask if people could have a gallery of sorts, (similar to peoples' persoanl art threads in the art section).
Upon investigation, I realized that [gra] is the tag for a graphics art thread in the art section, so
technically, yes, you CAN have your own graphics art thread, just like the other art threads,
BUT I got to thinking- there aren't many (if any) graphic arts threads in the art section, because most of the graphic artists hang out here, and may not have even known they could show their art in their own thread in the artwork section.

Sig shops are similar to an art thread for graphic artists, but what if they don't want to do commissioned work?

I, personally, would love to be able to visit someone's graphic art thread and look at their stuff. the showcase is good for critique, but if I wanted to go and see someone's series of works, that's hard to do.

So what can be done about it?
1. make it(somehow) more known that people can have a graphic arts thread inthe artwork section and encourage them to make one.
2. allow graphic artists to essentially have their own art threads in THIS forum (maybe a new subforum?)
3. It's fine how it is.
4. shut up margar. go away.

Graphic Artists CAN make their own personal show case here. It's just that none of them do. =P It used to be in a stickied thread here.

Yeah, people can have their own showcase thread - it's just that not many members have made one, or they quit updating it and it falls off the first page of threads (I will update mine soon, promise). About your number 1, I will make a sticky. A new subforum strictly for individual showcases would be great, however, I just question the amount of activity that would end up taking place within it.

I think a subforum might attract more attention to the fact that you CAN have your own showcase thread, and if it doesn't pick up, it can be scrapped or whatever. I don't think it would hurt to try.
It definately makes sense to give it it's own space so it doesn't get lost amongst the other random threads.

Re: a question/idea/proposal

I agree. It would be nice if the main forum part of GD were reserved for important board related issues (like the renaming that took place recently), informative stickies, and things like that - and there was a subforum for people wanting a thread to themselves to showcase their artwork.

Re: a question/idea/proposal

but does that mean the showcase thread would go bye bye, or stay stickied in the main forum?

I like the idea of having a "Here's my latest thing, what do you think?" thread, but also allowing individuals to have their own graphic art thread.

Re: a question/idea/proposal

I don't think it would be necessary to have every showcase thread stickied. If there were a separate subforum, the amount of posts shown on the first page by default would at least be greater, so threads wouldn't disappear as quickly. And when they do start to sink maybe that would be motivation for the person to update it.

Edit: I edited and put something (rather short) in the rules and information sticky about individual showcases. If there is anything else anyone thinks I should add / elaborate on, please say so.

Oh, I never was suggesting that every showcase thread be stickied!
what I was asking is if the general showcase for everyone to share and get critique would remain active and stickied, or if all showcasing and critique would move to the individual threads.

I know that in the art section, they have a "critique me" thread, as well as the peoples' individual art threads.

Oooh, yes, the small work showcase would definitely remain stickied, since it serves as a way for people to get fast feedback for their small works and signatures, and it's a place for people to post their artwork if they don't desire to make a showcase.

Re: a question/idea/proposal

excellent

so as it stands, people are welcome to make an individual showcase thread...
is that that, or will you be looking into making a separate subforum?

I'm very good at designing things on paper but have no clue on the computer is there a thread that teaches how to do that stuff?

Not just a thread, but an entire board. Look up at the top, and take the first left after the Graphics School sign.

Re: a question/idea/proposal

I personally, would like to see a subforum for this purpose. I find posting my works in a thread on the main Showcase page fails to be recognized, and in my opinion it's because it is mixed in with so many different variations of threads. I would support this idea whole-heartedly.

I will be asking about a separate forum. Any suggestions about what it should be called? Perhaps just 'Artwork' like the similar section in the Art & Writing forum?

Possibly titled 'Portfolios,' or something similar.

Re: a question/idea/proposal

I always figured that was what the main section of the Graphics Design board was for. But now that it's getting more active more threads are popping up that aren't just content, more suggestions and stuff.

Supporting the idea of a separate board. :3

Re: a question/idea/proposal

Hmm, if this does become a sub-forum, I would be happy to make an archive for it, as I did for tutorials. That way, if someone's thread is pushed back, it will still be granted easy access. This archive can include a name, a description (provided by the artist), a link to their porfolio, and anything else you would see fit.

Sounds good to me.

I've brought up the idea in staff, so fingers crossed.

So, any updates on this? Anything we could do to help this initiative pass?
