Oh here's an idea for the forum name: Illegal Photoshoppers.

ASIA'S EDIT: This is a discussion split off from the huge-ath SoI discussion thread.
But It could be interesting to discuss it,

What is the difference between Gimp and photoshop?
CAN Gimp produce all the results photoshop can? and if so, why does anyone botgher spending hundreds on photoshop (like mw ;-; ) if they can have a free alternative? (Gimp IS free, no? )

DISCUSS!

(first to start flaming and trolling gets infRAKSHAN! O_o )
( :>! )

Well, look, I can't pay and I need Photoshop. It isn't my fault Adobe charges such insane prices for their software.

Dog Dog: That's not my name.

Stony: It cost me about £50. Which is really quite reasonable.

Kelly - http://www.zeldauniverse.net/forums/...phic-rant.html

^ Found it. A rant about complaints about how much better Photoshop is then Gimp. Unfortunately Z moved both the pictures from it, but they were nearly exact copies of each other. Just because Gimp is different doesn't mean you couldn't use it to get photoshop-ish results.

And... we're off topic. That didn't take long.

Again, that is not my name. And also, that's where you live. I don't live in England. In the US, PS costs hundreds of dollars. Not affordable.

Dog Dog: I have tried to learn to use GIMP a lot of times. I cannot use it.

Re: Gimp VS Photoshop - just a price tag difference?

Stony/Ranil/Whatever, The GIMP is just as good as Photoshop and can do anything it can do with a few minutes extra work.

Honestly, I've been using GIMP for 2 years. When I got a trial of Photoshop, I couldn't get anything because the layouts were different, so I know what you're saying. REALLY, if it bugs you that much, there's something I gotta tell you then. There's a nifty thing out there called GIMPShop, which changes The GIMP's layout into a near identical of Photoshop (from what I know at least). Get it, then shut up.

Hey, there's no need to be harsh. And I know about GIMPshop. I don't think I'll be able to make anything even if I did get it. Because changing the layout doesn't change what the program can do. Oh yeah, and for the record, I used GIMP before I ever used PS, and still found it confusing.

Oh and I never said GIMP was worse than PS.

I know you didn't read that thread I went through the trouble of finding for you earlier. Seriously, either read that or stop complaining about your program.

Re: Gimp VS Photoshop - just a price tag difference?

Changing the layout won't change what it can do, but guess what? The Gimp and Photoshop can create the exact same outcome. It doesn't matter if the program's harder to use. What you've got to do is learn it. If you're comfortable with Photoshop, but can't get it, get GIMPShop. Things should be easier to use.

And DON'T give me the whole "I've heard of GIMPShop, it won't help" thing. Get it and make real opinions before ranting on about stupid things.

do you think when you post?

GIMP is Photoshop without Adobe's fancy label and exorbitant price slapped on it. you can do exactly the same things with GIMP as you can with Photoshop. And for the record, if you changed the layout of GIMP to match that of Photoshop, I guarantee you'd probably be able to make the same abysmal signatures you've always made.

Sorry if I come off as harsh (even if that's what I wanted to do), but your ignorance astounds me.

Alright! Still splitting! ^-^

But seriously dudes, let;s get some graphics-centered discussions going.

(AND I'm really curious as to what this gimp thing is - and thy it's not as widespread in use if it's free in comparison to photoshop =X)

Do any of you use both?
Which do you prefer? and why?

https://store2.adobe.com/cfusion/sto...ore=OLS-EDU-UK <- et voila All official and everything, no back of the lorry in the black of night business.

Oh, and it isn't me being snide. I tried to run the mac build of the Gimp and it just didn't want to play ball.

Oh, and I might be looking into learning Pixelmator.

Ranil, you don't need the latest version of Photoshop. The older ones (And we're talking around CS2 that has virtually the same features) are several hundreds less.

Oh, and no, Gimp can not do everything at the same speed of Photoshop, sorry. I've seen very few Gimpers on a high level (Kamangir would be one of them). As much as I want it to... No dice. :/

Re: Gimp VS Photoshop - just a price tag difference?

I use both Gimp and Photoshop(including 7.0, cs2, cs3, and cs4). There are a couple of things thats diffrent in my opinion. Using Gimp you have to do alot more filtering and more layers to get some of the effects that Photoshop has pre-made in its menu options. I find that rendering pics in Photoshop is also less work but besides that they're pretty much simular.

Photoshop images look abit more crisp too. It doesn't matter to me however, I can use them both just as good as the other...meh

Gimp doesn't have Blending Options, a feature which I reply heavily on.

GIMP runs on a Mac if you have X11 installed.

Yes it does, and Leopard has X11 installed by default. I even see it running when I run gimp. Gimp just refuses to work.

While I agree that Photoshop is probably easier to use, I stand by what I said before.

No matter what you use, GIMP or Photoshop, it's possible to create the exact same outcomes.
