Whee, posting. Looks bad. I think I need brighter colors. And the sprite looks fat. Not sure how to fix that. But my lack of sleep, too much sugar, and short attention span say that it's good enough to look human-ish. How bad is it?
Easily fixed my dear add an outline to it, go with darker colors to bring out more depth and edit the arms in front of the sprite and it should turn out okay!

No, it's not important. But it's my favorite style. ;D

It's easy to do also.

Additionally, add another color of shading to the dress. ;D

normally, that would be okay, but in M&L style, brighter colors are a must. ;D

the spriters resources' tutorial has a palette on one of them, so check that out for colors, if you're stuck!

Outline makes sprite look fat. I actually did outline it at first, but it looked worse so I went with the not-outlined one...

And I tried darkening the colors a second ago. Doesn't seem to add much more depth.

And... no idea how to change the hands to make them be infront of the sprite.

Not much of a difference, but I like the other version more. Not sure why. What does teacher think?

Re: William's Homeroom

The teacher thinks the first > the second. The first one makes me proud actually. That's better than what most people could come up with. As for the hands, you don't need to make them in front of the sprite. I think that sprite is acceptable as-is.

EXCEPT! You must add another color of shading into the dress, make sure to save the original version though, in case it doesn't work out.

I am proud of you, my pupil!

It goes without saying that sprites don't require noses, as they're a reflection of the creator's imagination and not an actual person.

Sorry, but sprites don't need noses. Unless you specifically say so in your directions.

Re: William's Homeroom

I have been outsmarted.

Alright, no nose for your sprites.

Next assignment for you: Make your characters clothes.

Clothes = shoes, sandals, flip-flops, a shirt, dress, blouse, vest, undershirt or no shirt. pants, trousers, shorts, jeans, swim suit etc. and any accessories. (choose only one of each different type of clothing defined by common sense) ;D specific ftw

Next assignment for Dog Dog: You're ahead, so you can either chill out, improve your sprite, or ask me for the next assignment. ;D

Re: William's Homeroom

@ Blizz, okay here's the critique:

...

There really isn't anything to critique! It's perfect as it is at the moment. The hat is my favorite part because of it's superior shading. I like how you went over and beyond what I had assigned you to make a totally unique clothing set, and I'm glad you're willing to take the time to do so. ;D

@ Dog Dog

The next assignment is:

Have fun!

The deadline? Whenever your sprite is ready!

William! NOOO!!! Don't teach people to edit! Editing is bad!

By the way, you should give your students Paint Shop Pro. It would help them.

It's like baby-steps:

recoloring<editting<customing

Asking them to do full fledged customs would be murder as of now.

As for the paint shop pro, that's a good idea. I'll edit this post with the link tomorrow.

EVERYONE CHEER! This thread has evolved from the gray to the golden triforce! ;D

Re: William's Homeroom

Yes but theres a huge differnce between editing a walking sprite, and makeing a walking sprite. Asking them to do a custom wouldn't be murder it would be Grand.
Mostly though I fear that by the Editing they will grow fat with self indolgence as if the caved the statue of david when all they did was put a button on him!

Yes, but for clueless students like me, putting a button on hte statue of david is all that we're able to do. So we stick with things that won't bite my head off.

And... I'll get to it soon. I'm actually attempting to edit a link sprite sheet at the moment for a game me and my brother are working on. So eventually I'll get the mario-ish ones done.

Re: William's Homeroom

Alrighty then. Yeah, it's not too great and most of it is just recolors, but the point of the edits was just to make it so that no one could tell it was Link. We'll probably change them again later, but we needed the sprites and animations to start something in Game Maker.

Loading... loading... loading... YAY!

But yeah, not the best or most creative, but it animates well and isn't obviously Link, and that's what we were aiming for. Oh, by the way, none of those poses are original. We were just deleting parts of the sprite sheet whenever we could because the other file slows up the computer too much.

And... I'll get to my actual assignment as soon as I finish debugging the shop in the game that those sprites are for.

Those look good, and no; there is barely a resemblance between link and your new character. If you don't mind enclosing this, what is your game about?

I honestly don't know the story line yet. But you get to pick which of the three characters to be, a Wizard, Warrior, or Archer. And it's kinda Diablo-ish in the system, where every level you choose whether you want more defense, attack, or magic power. Kinda confusing. We'll probably think up a plot after we manage to get all the bugs out of it. It's pretty much another experiment of seeing what we can do and what works best.

And... still trying to fix the shop system... I'll actually start working on my assignment soon.
