Re: Signature/Small Work Showcase

Well now, I wouldn't say that using tried-and-true techniques is a particularly bad thing, hero_of_legends.

Anyway, Twilight, I think that sig is pretty good, although I don't personally like the "widescreen" style black bars, but again that's just me. The text blends nicely, and I don't think I can actually find anything bad about the sig. It does look a lot like some of your others though, as h_o_l mentioned.

Now, I think that's two comments, unless h_o_l's doesn't count. Here's a sig I just made.

Edit: Fix'd

Don't like the liney bordes. And basically everything you said.

And as for the tried and true. It isn't bad, it just gets old. i've saw a hundred of those sigs, two on this page.

What about the one the_Predator made? It looks the same, just different colors.

Maybe it's the border that makes me think things look them same. I'm sorry for accusing you, Twilight. I just have saw other people do that before.

I really don't care, I just don't understand how you could possible think they look alike.

It took you that long to figure it out? I agree overall though, a lot of these people have great potential, it's just being wasted for looking good for 3 seconds.

Re: Signature/Small Work Showcase

No, it's the fact that there is two styles on these forums - grunge and abstract. Most people use the grunge and other use the abstract but I don't think most people know how to use each one or even know what is good in each one. People usually find a style and do the same steps through each sig which makes them look all the same. I maybe not one to talk, but I try to go for sigs that are somewhat abstract but then also smudge techniqued and I also try to do darker ones. With what I said up there I also believe that the 'awesome sig makers' on this site aren't what they're up to be are and aren't that good at the core. [/rant]

Not really. Most people try to do their own style, but fail flat in their face as it looks like 100% of other people's, hence the view that there are just 2.

Fact is, people will try to imitate other people to add to their style, or just do it because it's the popular thing to do.

Carving your own style is hard anyway, and takes a lot of time and effort.

Slightly too monotone for my tastes.

It has potential, but Midna does not really work well with the rest of the signature.

Either she's too dark or too blurry.

If that's supposed to be directed to me, than you probably have no idea about the basic concepts of art.

Re: Signature/Small Work Showcase

Let's keep this as a discussion, not an argument.

I like to think I have my own style, fairly simple and sleek. But yes, there are a lot of sigs and sig makers using the same basic render+brush formula. But it works, so hey.

Re: Signature/Small Work Showcase

Yeah, then they get lots of credit by others when the sig makers know that it's a a bad sig to begin with.

Re: Signature/Small Work Showcase

This probably has nothing to do with the discussion at hand, but...

I try and do something different with each sig I make. Yeah, I use some similar techniques, but I try them at different points and add different techniques to those ones. And sometimes I look at really good digital artists for inspiration. Like Edward Khon, who has told me that one of my sigs has potential to be very good.

I find DSL9, Twilight, and Sora a few of the best sig-makers here at ZU. :/

So, um, yeah...I lost where I was going. ._.

-just noticed the Midna sig needs one more comment-
Too monotone. :/ Pretty boring overall. :/ Sorry.

Not sure if I've posted this one before...but yeah. :/

Re: Signature/Small Work Showcase

Yep, you came in at a good point in time, and that relates to the discussion.

Anyways, yes, I've seen that before. I like the sharp clean effects, but the white part by his head could probably do without that angled stroke effect or whatever is there. I think you should apply the image and smudge the right side to make it different from the left side because you can tell that they are the same.
