I need some help on how to make hair black and white on Gimp?

I'm trying to recolor a Pokemon picture for my fiancee(We love Pokemon), with our favorite colors, but I can't figure out how to do it..We do that with anime a lot, and I made her stuff in Photoshops Geek mode..But I decided to use Gimp instead, as it seems right up my alley..I've touched up everything I wanted to, but the problem is the hair..I wanted to make the hair black and white..Not greyscale, but black and white..Kind of like below, where I made most of the hair white, and put blotches of black in it, and then I used the smudge tool to even out the black against the white..

This seems like what I want, but its messy..And its not recoloring, either..Its solid color, that covers the detail..You see what I mean? This is the original

So I tried switching the mode of the paintbrush to "Color", which just recolors the hair without covering the details and shadows, but the darkest that it can go is dark grey, when I have black selected in the color box. I don't want grey..I want black.

I don't know what to do..

I kind of gave up on making all the hair black and white, and I'm just making the bang of hair closest to the face completely white..And the rest of the hair will be black..JET black. But I can't make it black without covering the shadows and detail..

I made the bang of hair white, with solid color..That wasn't a problem, since its just one bang..But now, I'm trying to RECOLOR the hair jet black, but the darkest it can go is dark grey..

I need help -_-..

It would be nice if I could just recolor the bang white, and the rest of the hair black without covering the detail that makes it look real -_-

Hmm...I really have no idea how to explain how to do this, however I have an idea in my head about how, and I'd be willing to try it for you. If you'll post the full picture I'll try and get it done today or tomorrow.

So uh...
Let me get this straight. You want to make the hair colour black without touching the details?

I know one technique from the top of my head. You did half of it already by changing the brush to "colour" and then selecting pure black. I know this wouldn't sound like a good idea (though it could work), but have you tried using the burn tool against the black colour brush?
Or... Somehow selecting the hair only and creating multiple layers of it and setting them to multiply until it gets black enough.

I'm not entirely sure with what you want to achieve, but I hope that helps.

That's what I thought he could do, EL, but with black and white sometimes the color layer mode/paint mode doesn't work right unless you blur it a thousand times. Otherwise the colors like stay separated and look terrible.

So I was gonna try it for him,

Pretty much what EL said. Quickly and roughly put this together on PSP8 which I assume is very similar to gimp.

Guide:

Spoiler:

Step 1:

Neatly lasso/magic wand the hair:

Step 2:

On a new layer, fill the selection OR neatly brush it in black:

Step 3:

Set this new layer to "color" to get this:

Step 4:

Duplicate the newest layer twice. Set them both to "soft light" with one of them on 80% opacity (optional):

Hope it helps.

I don't think he wanted the hair to be pure black, but more of a gradient type thing from black to white.

^Oh, yeah. He can still follow through the little guide and add a new layer in the image afterward. He can lasso part of the hair, fill it in white, filter it with a blur, and set the layer under "exclusion" or something along those lines.
