Sora's Homeroom.
 Welcome to my homeroom. I've been creating graphics in Photoshop for around four years now, and I still learn something new every now and then. I used Photoshop Elements 3.0, however I have much knowledge on all of the other versions. You'll learn here the basics, and perhaps once you master those, more advanced techniques that'll improve your graphic-skills. And yes, I take a long time to reply. Alright Doomrender, here is my comments and suggestions on the signature:
I noticed that you used splatter brushes on the signature, however the render honestly looks like it'd fit better in a more grudge-y, right? The text is good, however not a good choice of fonts. For now I'd like you to stick with the various forms of Arial, and Century Gothic - they're nice and simple. Since the signature's main color scheme is black, I would recommend a white, 2-3 pixel border on the top and bottom only. HylianShroom: I'll be glad to take you under my wing as a student.

It's a decent signature Shroom. However, notice on the render of Link that you used, that the lighter side of him is on the left side, but your light source is on the right? Yeah. =P
As for the text, I think you could loose the 'Link' in there. If you're going to have multiple words for text, keep it generally together.  For your next assignment I want you to use this render and work on your lighting and perspective.

I'm assuming it should be the same dimensions (380x100).
EDIT: Sorry, lighting's really not my thing. I'm having problems. Assistance would be nice.

Doomender: Firstly, try saving your signatures as the .PNG file type, it's the highest quality. Simple lighting is easy, just choose a 300 pixel soft brush and use it once on a different layer on top of the render, or wherever you want your light to be coming from.
Here are a few of my examples:  A difficult render to use because of the lighting on Voldemort's face/body, so I added a lightsource in there so it would be blended a bit better.  See? Very simple effect. gin007654321: Do you have a version of Photoshop?

Hey, it's pretty good, though it's the background that you're having trouble with on this one. The background colors are too close to the render's colors.
You want the render to stick out a little bit. You can do this by selecting a soft black brush and brush around the sides of the signature, not just out side of the render, but give it some space. Set that layer to soft light and lower the opacity a little if it looks too constrast-ey. You then could try on a new layer the same trick but with white as your selected color and brush over the render and that space between him and where it starts getting dark, set to soft light, and lower the opacity a little. This gives it some depth. Hope that helped. XD

Hrm... Make a signature with any render/stock of your choice, however the color scheme is black and white. You can have text if you'd like.
