Ending the series

Timeline arguments...
Crackpot theories...
A lore the size of Texas...

These are all signs of a series that has been going too long. The Zelda series is getting old and stale in it's ways, lacking creative bosses, characters, and lands.

I think the series should end. With the next game, in fact, I'm hoping the series will end, to be replaced by a spiritual successor (Think Prince of Persia to Assassin's Creed) that can be enjoyed much more, both by those developing it and playing it.

The game play can all be changed, the lore won't affect the story anymore, allowing for more open, branching story lines, the characters won't be as overused and can be filled with life, in contrast to our current cast of Zelda regulars.

What do you guys think?

Re: Ending the series

While I agree it has grown stale in some ways, I would not like it to end, simply because I still do love the games, and i enjoy seeing its lore expanded.
And don't count on it ending anytime soon. Nintendo will continue to make the games as long as it keeps making money.

Re: Ending the series

Zelda should end when Miyamoto either retires or dies, whichever comes first, and no sooner or later than that. The series is not getting stale at all to me. If they ended it, and turned it into one of those "sequel series", I would be royally ticked off at Nintendo. The fun is in discovering what they're going to do next and exploring new Zelda worlds and living the fantasy.

You don't need new content/plot for that. I'm sorry, but I disagree completely.

Re: Ending the series

Die hard OoT fans are to blame, they demand more titles akin to the "mature" OoT, in terms of gameplay, narrative, and aesthetic. It's absolutely ridiculous.

The series shouldn't end by any means, fanboy's simply need to understand that plagiarism and unnecessary spiritual sequels only deaden creativity.

I don't think the series should end. Even if I get bored of it and stop buying the games, I'd still want it to continue, because I think that gaming as a whole benefits from having Zelda around.

What's ruining Zelda is the kiddy casual approach they're taking with it. Hell, I can't wait till Miyamoto retires, he's making the series fodder for people who don't pay enough attention to quality.

Zelda needs to change from its recent course it's going now. It's raking in a bunch of money, because it's got the Zelda name. One that used to be known for quality titles, before they started taking the family approach, which calls for a dumbed down and easy kids game.

The series needs to pack content in, like all of the games before TP. With a Zelda in the works for the wii, there is no excuse to pull another TP.

Okay timeline arguements have existed since OOT. Here we are a decade later and it's stilling go so no that's not a legitimate reason.
What theories are you referring to?
Ever read Tolkien?

Just get rid of the Nostalgia factor okay not get rid of but lessen it. They just need to find the perfect balance between creativity and tradition. TP leaned more towards Tradition but that was to offset WW. Actually TP and WW can be considered the OOT and MM of the GCN. On is new and different and the other uses the traditional Zelda formula. Spiritual sucessor is a lame idea. If the lore doesn't affect the story anymore than technically you're just taking away what makes Zelda so intriguing. Okay what Zelda rergulars besides the Triforce bearers did TP have? Anyway it seems like all of that can be accomplished without just stripping Zelda of what makes it Zelda.

Zelda needs a reboot. Throw away the formula, and do something new and innovative. MM was a step in the right direction.

Re: Ending the series

A couple of years ago I would have looked at this idea and thought "But the games are so goooood! I don't want them to stop!" but at this point in time it's a much more appealing idea to me than it was before. The series is getting stale, the storyline is screwed up beyond convolution and the limitations of games set in this universe are at this point just too great.

So yeah, I would really like for the series to end and let something else pick up the pace, a spiritual sequel, you could say.

Well, it's either that, or reboot the series. Or just let go of all those limitations and do some random crap for the hell of doing something new and better, but I can only imagine such a thing would raise all hell...

This. While I don't think Miyamoto should retire... the Zelda games went from thought provoking to child's play. They continuously try to make it easier and easier to "draw in a new audience" but the audience they should be trying to attract is the older fans and people in their twenties. That's where the game market is. Not with little five year olds--they have Nintendogs and Hannah Montana games for that.

Re: Ending the series

why would you want something to end, when it's doing so well.
If you don't like Zelda no more then don't play it.

However as time goes on, zelda will probably be made for the younger generations, instead of focusing on us oldbies.

Of course I'll probably still play them.

Re: Ending the series

No big video game franchises(like sonic, Mario ect) have ended yet, why should Zelda be the first one to end?
Besides the Zelda series still has too much to offer to us gamers... we don't how long the series Will last... but the time it has left should be enjoyed by us Zelda fans.
I can't wait too see the Zelda Wii trailer.

Re: Ending the series

Without the timeline argument and theorizing, my life would be very boring, thank you. Zelda is among oen of the great series ever created for these reasons - timelines and the theorizing is what shapes the out-of-game fun factor of the series.

It will be going for a VERY long time. The timeline will be answered one day as long as Aonuma is around, and the theorizing will continue to the rest of eternity because the series has introduced a thing called mystery if you look deeper into the overall storyline.

The series is and always will be full of life and bliss.

Re: Ending the series

The only Time I would like the series to end is if, it starts going dowwwwwnnnnnnhill and I mean really badly, then the only reason I would want it to end is to preserve zelda and keep it's legendary title forever instead of being bashed on for becoming crap.

And it won't come to that, because people like you will keep on buying the games, no matter what, saying to yourself, "this game is going to be the best one yet" and when it's not, you'll say, "next time, they'll do it right!", and the cycle repeats.

Re: Ending the series

I'd just like to get away from the collect three items, get important item, collect more stuff, kill boss (usually Ganon/Ganondorf). I love having Ganondorf being the primary antagonist but he is truly becoming a Bowser. I thought TP was going to do that until they mentioned him. Zant would have been a really good final boss. And I like the Master Sword, but it shows up in too many games and it makes the game's structure more rigid.
