Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I haven't because I'm a n00b lol. But I can't think of anybody who didn't need a guide or that issue of Nintendo Power with the original game's maps! If you have, you are a genius!!!

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I have almost. In OOT, TP and WW I used a guide maybe once. I searched advice in Water temple OOT (if a remember correctly it didn't even help because I found the way to continue by myself), in the second trial course of the pirate ship in WW (hadn't listened to the control explanations closely enough, I am really embarassed about this one), And Zant in TP (didn't know what weapon to use in the forest temple, of course it was the boomerang).

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I haven't beaten the first two.
The only Zelda game I used a guide in was LttP, and that was way back. I couldn't comprehend Turtle Rock the first time through.

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I didn't use a walkthrough on LA or MM. I was very proud when I found all of the Secret Seashells in LA without any help.

I originally used walkthroughs on ALttP, OoT, and TP, but have since beaten them several times without them.

I have only played through most of the other games once each, and I probably used walkthroughs at various points on all of them, although I can't remember for sure.

I played through OoT, WW, and TP without guides. I checked one to find what mask I was missing in MM, but that was it.

I've never used a guide. Just asked my brother, if I really didn't know what to do. :3

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

The only time I ever used a guide is for that annoying puzzle before the Master Sword in TP. I can't imagine actually using a guide until I have spent way too long trying to figure something out. Actually using a guide without trying that hard is basically taking away alot of the fun and kind of pointless as it gives away surprises

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I used the guide in OOT cause I was really young, but I don't think I really used it that much except for a few temples and the biggoron sword quest. Then I used the guide ONCE in TP and WW. Then I beat all the oracles, no guide, MC, no guide, didn't use a guide for the FS series. I think that's it....

EDIT: or PH, I don't think I used the guide for any portable Zelda.

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

No, I never used a guide to play through a Zelda game. That totally takes away the fun. And Zelda isn't that hard, that you would need one. Just try hard enough, you will figure a way out.

Errhh, wait, there was one exception for me, which would be the 2nd Quest of The Legend of Zelda. I used maps here, which in this game pretty much counts as a guide, because some of the dungeons were pretty confusing.

However, I sometimes also used guides, when I was missing a collectible item and absolutely couldn't find it. Like in Phantom Hourglass, there was this one Spirit Gem behind the stairs before you go up to the boss in the Courage Temple. I totally missed it and searched EVERYWHERE for the last gem except for there... But afterwards I regretted looking it up on GameFAQs, because actually finding it one day would have been so much more rewarding. So, I won't do that again in any of the upcoming games.

Ah yeah, and I used a negotiation guide for Freshly Picked: Tingle's Roys Rupeeland. But otherwise all the bargaining would have made the game too annoying to enjoy it.

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

Minish Cap was the first ever Zelda I played through with absolutely no previous knowledge or anything- I hadn't even read a review for it. I definitely enjoyed it more for that reason.
Twilight Princess I deliberately avoided any reviews etc for the same reason, I just looked at the score
I did a bit on MM to find the fairies and probably a few other times, and I definitely did on OoT for the Skulltula locations, but I also saw my brother playing some which I'm sure helped me!
I generally try not to look at a guide unless it is stopping me enjoying the game.

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I used a guide on my first playthrough of TP until I got to the Forest Temple and decided it was lame and ditched it. I beat it like a week after. Other than that, I haven't used a guide (except maybe to get a Heart Piece or two, but that's about it.)

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

TP was my first game in which I didn't use a guide at all. I enjoyed the thrill of discovery so much I didn't want any help at all, even though I had some side quests left unfinished.

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I ruined a lot of games when I was young by using guides. Nowadays I'm steering clear of them, unless there's one specific part that I absolutely can't figure out. When I beat Link's Awakening without a guide, it was extremely rewarding, especially the last few dungeons. I've already made up my mind that I'm not going to use a guide in Zelda Wii, no matter what. And I think I'm going to take hachigatsu3's advice. I'm going to try not to read anything about it. Actually, as of now, I'm going to deliberately avoid anything about the plot - I don't want to know whether or not that girl is the Master Sword until it reveals the truth in the game. Heh... That's actually how I was with the last few Harry Potter books.

lol I'm pretty sure the LARGE majority of people here didn't use guides when beating Zelda games. I didn't use a guide at ALL for OoT... actually I did because I was incredibly stuck on one part (gerudo place), but the guide didn't help me and I figured it out on my own, so that doesn't count . I didn't use a guide for MM, EXCEPT on anju + kafei, I couldn't figure out how to get into kafei's house, but that's a sidequest. No guide for LA. No guide at ALL for TP (lol so easy). But since I rented WW and was short on time, i had to use a guide to how I can get in the ghost ship... actually I don't think I would have found the ship for a month if I didn't use a guide, I was so lost.

Wow I used more guides than I thought, I thought I used none >.>

EDIT: to above post, I know a lot of people that use guides rabidly in single playergames, like they almost always use guides, I never understood why, what's the point of playing the game? Might as well watch a movie...

Lol and the "trying to go in w/out expectations" thing almost never works, I REALLY tried hard for the LotR series, but after fellowship EVERYONE knew the rest of the story, but still I kept it mostly unspoiled. I just stopped reading Harry potter books after #4, everyone just shouts "X dies" all the time, so there's no point in reading the book, all the mystery is gone... Sirius dies, Dumbledore dies, Snape dies, Lupin dies, and Harry dies. Bummer

Re: Has anyone played through a Zelda game without a guide?

I have never used a guide for any zelda game. I wait until when I am finished with the main story quest first. Then I use the guide for heart pieces if needed. But I refuse to use them because it takes the fun out of it for me. Why use something that can help you through the game when I can do it myself. My twin brother always tries to buy the walkthroughs for the zelda games but I threaten to kick his ass if he ever does it. But I enjoy it more when I do it myself.

Well whenever I am forced to use a guide, I am almost CONVINCED that there is a glitch in the game that's screwing me, but when I read the guide it usually turns out that I was going about the problem in the COMPLETELY wrong way.

^^^ That has never happened to me yet. All though I do get stuck alot like an all of the water temples I get stuck to the point where I wanted to run out and buy a guide book. But I usually figure out the hard puzzles.
