What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

You've seen it.

You're climbing Ganon's tower, hearing the haunting 'Ganon's Theme' playing. You reach the top, and he's playing a giant organ... Then it disappears.

I know it somewhat references such villains like 'Phantom of the Opera',
which has been lifted for many stories and films already.

We should know by now everything in Zelda has some meaning, even if well hidden...

So what is this?
Is this Ganon's substitute of a musical instrument that seems to reoccur in the Zelda Series? Is it just for dramatic effect?

I'd love to hear any thoughts, views or theories on the concept... Thanks!

Hmm...Happy Mask Salesman also makes an organ appear/disappear in Majora's Mask...
Not sure if there's some meaning behind those two occurrences or not.

I accidentally came across a small connection, mundane I know, but still a connection none the less.

Look at the design similarities between the two...
Hmm...

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

It might have been for drama. Or maybe just to be a little funny. It's not just background music you're hearing. It's actually Ganondorf playing a sing.

I'm really sure the HMS thing was just supposed to be funny. I mean, did anyone expect him to pull out such a huge instrument?

I always thought it was kind of bad ass. The music gets louder as you creep up the castle, and then suddenly...there he is...playing the organ.

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

Maybe Ganon spent his free-time playing the organ? Maybe the organ, like the ocarina, had magical powers, and he was using it to steal the Triforce of Wisdom from Zelda?

Just based on my own speculation,
I had believed it had some sort of...hypnotic power through the organ.

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

It MAY have hypnotic powers. If it was seen in aLttP, it would make a lot of sense. Unfortunately there isn't one, so... I do think he is a melodramatic egotist though.

HMS's organ in my opinion was a combination of humor and continuation. each of the four Links (Dylian, Deku, Goron, Zora) have different instruments, so it would make sense that HMS would have a differen one too. He does seem to do weird and impossible things, like moving from one pose to another with no transition.

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

Perhaps it was to draw or direct Link to his room... Notice how everything disappears when the battle ensues, that may signify that it served its purpose...

or...

It could just be a leisure activity to pass time until the Hero arrived...

or...

perhaps he was punishing Zelda by making her listen to evil music...

whatever it was, it was awesome....

I'd say it was mostly for character building and dramatic effect. A character who plays creepy music on the organ is both more sophisticated and evil.

^ I agree completely. I think Ganondorf plays the organ to show intelligence and sophistication aswell.

Im pretty sure Ganondorf's organ was there for effect. It was pretty damn awesome though.

also i thought this thread was about something else about Ganondorf.
*gets mind out of the gutter and flees the thread*

Yeah, just a dramatic thing, and it worked out very well.

I think the Organ's coolio. I think generally, it's purpose was for dramatic effect.

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

I believe it was for dramatic effect as well as to give an image of sinister intelligence because organs are easily confused as an icon of evil and loneliness.

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

I agree that it could have been for dramatic effect. Probably humor as well, seeing as most of the time you don't see the villian of the game up in a tower playing an instrument. It is a little odd how everything just disappeared though, you think he would take better care of his organ...

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

As others have said, it was probably just for dramatic effect, as well as humor in a sense, seeing as how you've been hearing an actual song throughout the tower, not background music.

As for why it vanished in the fight, I figured that Ganondorf just magically dismissed things that would get in the way of the battle. Notice how Zelda vanishes as well.

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

What about it's connection to the Triforce of Power?

I mean, logically we would think of someone consumed by such a force to be completely and totally driven toward his goal: conquest.

Such an enemy, however, is quite easy to defeat as he is blinded to everything else.

But then Link sees Ganon playing the Organ, an instrument that takes a very long time to master. It shows his power has not only increased his strength and magic, but also his mind. Playing the organ creates a much more formidable and dangerous opponent for Link.

Re: What is the significance of Ganondorf's organ in OoT?

Not everything in the Zelda series is symbolism, Ferg. But I'll play along.

What I find most interesting is that the organ continues to play "Ganon's Theme" even after Ganondorf stops touching the keyboard. Perhaps he only keeps his automated pipe organ around to make himself look more intelligent whilst he pretends to play.
Most of what he accomplishes throughout the game's story is by means of intimidation or deception. Why not combine the two as a precursor to the game's finale?
