Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

Hello guys, I spent the last week on translating the TotG manual into english. I found that following a more direct translation of the manual fixes the continuity errors presented when following ALttP into OoT.
I.E. The ALttP manual states the sages created the sword to thwart Ganondorf's evil power after he stole the Trifroce. But then in OoT it wouldn't be there if they didn't make it till after Ganon opened the Sacred Realm. Conundrum. The japenese version as follows fixes that:

Quote:
A Tale: "The History of Hyrule"

To tell the history of Hyrule, the stage for The Legend of Zelda, one must come to know the myth of the Triforce.
It is an ancient myth about three Goddesses who are worshipped in Hyrule. The Hylians (also the root word for the word Hyrule) were the people closest to the gods.
In their writings left for their descendants, the Hylians talk of creation by the three Goddesses, the "Goddess of Power," the "Godddess of Wisdom," and the "Godddess of Courage."

The Myth (From the Genesis Preface)

In the times long past, before man first emerged, the Goddesses descended upon the world when it was nothing but chaos.
Using their various abilities, they brought order and life to the world.

The "Goddess of Power" used her flame to dye the mountains red and made the earth.

The "Goddess of Wisdom" made science and magic, and nature was given order.

And the "Goddess of Courage" used the kindness of her strong stalwart heart, and created those which crawl on the earth,
those which travel in the air, and all of the living creatures of the world.

At the time the Goddesses left this world, after having created everything, the Goddesses consummated the land with a symbol forged of their own power,
in the form of a sacred, golden, triangle: the "Triforce." Their course finally running to completion, the Goddesses left the Triforce to rule the entire world.

The Triforce, held three different emblems respectively: "The Ruler of Power," "The Juror of Wisdom," and "The Forger of Courage".
It would shine in the Sacred Realm, somewhere in the world, until one who was worthy of inheriting those powers appeared.
The Hylian people, who left behind these written records, were an chosen people able to hear the voices of gods.
For that reason, the Hylians have long, pointed ears, unsurpassed senses, and the ability to use magic.
It is said that they passed on stories of their magic and prophecies to their descendants, who rooted themselves in all parts of the world.

The Sacred Realm

Here in Hyrule, there remain many ruins of the Hylian people, and it is an area very much tied to the myth.
And even here, old traditions are associated with the Triforce, one such example is an old saying about the Triforce:

"Below the heavens light,
The sky shines gold, not blue.
There, the Triforce's might
Makes mortal dreams come true."

Many aggressively searched for the Golden Power, but no one, not even the Hylian sages, knew how to find the Sacred Realm.
Many reports began to surface; some said the Triforce lay beneath the relics of the desert, inside the cemetary in the shadow of the high mountains,
but no one ever found it.
That yearning for the Triforce soon turned to lust for power, which in turn led to the spilling of blood.
Soon the only motive left among those searching for the Triforce was pure greed.

The more carefree people had to live days of disquiet.
That is, until one day, completely by chance, the entrance to the Sacred Realm was opened by by a certain group of thieves.

It was a world different from our own. The Triforce was there, casting a golden light in the midst of twilight.
It is said that the group of thieves pushed each other, the color of their eyes changing, as they drew nearer to the Triforce.
After the bloody confrontation among comrades had ended, the group's leader had survived and won.
His hand dirty with fresh blood, the leader touched the Triforce and the crest's spirit began to whisper.

"If thou hast a desire, then I shall desire it as well."

The leader smiled, and the echo of his laugh echoed across time and space and even to the far away land of Hyrule.
The man's name was Ganondorf, commonly known as the evil thief Ganon.
At this time the evil King Ganon, who has threatened Hyrule for centuries, was born.

The Sealing War

Ganon acquired the Triforce, but no one knows what Ganon wished for.
However, in time Ganon's evil advanced even to the land of Hyrule.
People of greed were herded and consumed by this powerful gathering smoke, and disappeared.

Black clouds permanently darkened the sky, and many disasters beset Hyrule.
The King of Hyrule called upon the Seven Sages of Hyrule, as well as the Knights and ordered them to seal the source of evil.
The Triforce, not being a god itself, cannot judge between good and evil. However, it could not be assumed that only a good person would get their hands on the Triforce.
For that reason, the people of Hyrule had been told by the gods to make something that would repulse any evil that may kidnap the Triforce: the blade of evil's bane.
It was called the Master Sword, and it is said that only a true hero could use it. The Sages first had to search for the existence of the Master Sword and a hero to use it.
However, the situation was urgent, and Ganon's malice was enclosing on the royal palace. Using the most of their powers, the Sages and Knights threw open a heroic battle with the evil one.
In the fierce attack, the Group of Knights formed a shield. Regrettably, their force exhausted, they fell offering their lives. Nonetheless, the Sages completed the seal.
The people celebrated their victory; Hyrule had been saved from Ganon's misuse of the Triforce's power.
This battle, for its many sacrifices, was passed down to future generations as the "Sealing War."

The Coming of The Priest

Many centuries have passed since the Sealing War. Hyrule was in a time of peace, for its people had wise and devout hearts.
The sealing became a distant legend. Memories of the vicious Sealing War faded over the generations...

So it is no surprise that no one was prepared for the unexplained catastrophes that began to occur.
Pestilence and drought, uncontrollable even by magic, ravaged the land.
The King of Hyrule was greatly troubled, and had the seal studied, but found nothing. The people had nothing else to do but pray to the gods.
Then, like a comet, a man named Agahnim appeared, and ended the catastrophes with a curious magic.
The people heralded him as a hero; the King proclaimed him to be the second coming of the seven sages, appointed him priest, and invited him to the castle.

Once more, peace appeared to have returned to Hyrule.

However, left in charge of the country, Agahnim began to govern Hyrule in place of the King and abuse his political power as he saw fit.
Recently, there have been undying rumors that he plans to remove the King and take the throne for himself, and that every night he is performing suspicious ceremonies.
The people of Hyrule have become gripped by dread.

Prologue

One night, a girl's voice awakens you from your sleep. The voice begins talking to you in your head.

"Help me.... My name is Zelda....
I am being held in the castle's underground prison...."

You sit up, not sure if it is a dream or reality. You realize that your uncle, who is normally asleep by now, is preparing to leave.

"I will be back home home before morning. Do not leave the house!" Leaving these words and a jolt to his large body, your uncle departs the house.

In the dusk you saw that your uncle carried a sword and a shield.

This night is like no other...

What was the owner of that voice trying to say?
Who is Zelda?
Where is your uncle going, and to do what...?

Thus, as the rain fell during this ominous night, the Legend of Zelda was surely set to begin.

The Goal of This Game

The Sacred Land, where the Triforce exists, has been changed into a "Dark World " as a reflection of Ganon's desires.
Ganon, however, is still not pleased, and plans to make "Light World," Hyrule, his own.
To do this, he needs to break the Sages Seal. But he cannot do this with his power alone.
He has to sacrifice the maiden descendants of the seven sages to break the seal.
The priest Agahnim is doing a good job at making this a reality.
As a Hero, it is your mission to rescue the maidens sent into the Realm of Darkness, defeat Ganon, and make a new wish on the Triforce.
The aim of the game is to solve the many mysteries and adventures that await you along the way to restoring Hyrule.

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

They changed the backstory for aLttP when they rereleased it on the GBA.

So if that is from the original, it is no longer correct.

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

That's very interesting...but much of it is known already. I couldnt really point out any new information. I was however interested in this part:
Quote:
It was a world different from our own. The Triforce was there, casting a golden light in the midst of twilight.
It is said that the group of thieves pushed each other, the color of their eyes changing, as they drew nearer to the Triforce.
Reminds me of TP, especially the part about how the eyes of the thieves changed color as they drew closer to the Triforce. Gave me flashbacks of the cutscene where Lanayru tells the story of the Fused Shadows

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

I wouldn't call this a proper translation. It's of retconned material.

It is not transliterated either.

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

Hey mate, you've put in a tonne of effort to translate this... really well done!

Whether the Triforce of the Gods manual is considered void or not, it does solve a bit of confusion about the Master Sword. Your translation clearly shows that the gods told the Hylians, the regular people to make the sword to repel evil... nothing of sages and all that. I believe there was a pretty heated discussion in another thread about that.

And just wondering... is the GBA re-release manual in Japanese an updated version of the old Japanese manual, or is it condensed/changed significantly?

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

The GBA release is changed to reflect OoT, the original game textdump and manual are now completely obsolete.

There was a retcon.

Plain and simple. A non professional translation is a waste of effort, you need knowledge to transliterate properly.

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

The GBA ALttP manual is horribly undetailed and used not used as an offcial source, it is as follows:

Quote:
A PROLOGUE TO "A LINK TO THE PAST" |
----------------------------------------
Aeons ago, the deities of Power, Courage,
and Wisdom descended to the world of
chaos. They created the world that we know
and left behind a symbol of their strength,
the golden emblem known as the Triforce,
which they hid in the Golden Land.

After many years, an opening was found that
led from our fair Hyrule to the Golden Land
where the Triforce was still hidden. Many
sought treasure in this place, but none re-
turned -- only beings of great evil emerged
from the Golden Land.

The King of Hyrule gathered the seven sages
to find a way to seal the entrance to the
Golden Land so that his kingdom would be
safe from the evil there. The sages
succeeded and brought peace again to Hyrule.
However...

...strange things have been happening in Hyrule since the appearance of Agahnim,
a mysterious sorcerer who gained fame for extinguishing a devastating blaze of
unknown origin some years ago.

And now...

...one night, a girl's voice wakes you from sleep. "Help me...my name is Zelda...
I am in the castle dungeon." Not knowing if the voice was a dream or reality, you
step into the rain and forbidding darkness...and the Legend of Zelda begins.
As you can see it is a very condensed version of the tale, suffice to say it leaves out a lot of plot points. I also don't want to hear anything about this version retconning the previous TotG manual, as it is really only a shortened version. Leaving the other one intact.

The main reason that the story was included in the manual was to tell the history of the Triforce myth, but this version basicly leaves that out.

Sorry Pikmin, but the GBA rerelease was a retcon, the old stuff is obsolete, move on.

Feel free to base fanfics off of the old stuff though.

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

The GBA version is only a condensed version. I don't see how it could actually retcon TotG's manual, if it is only a shorter version of the story(leaving out a lot of stuff that actually happened, and describing other stuff in a lot less detail). If you can give real proof from Shigeru Miyamoto or Eiji Aonuma that the full story described in the TotG's manual(which is basically a text version of OoT events), is no longer canon I'll relent. Until then...

A comparison of the GBA manual, and my translated version is available at the following link:

I'm not sure about the manual, but the game script is GBA supersedes the SNES version. Marketing people and Technical Writers tend to do the writing for manuals/packaging.

Well yes, execpt for the Palace Of Four Sword the GBA game's few differences unfortunatly crush the SNES one. The only thing that really bothers me about the new version of the game taking precedence is that some lines were changed and it is no longer hinted Zelda & Link are related.

It was never hinted at.

People assumed wrongly. Way to go shippers.

Yeah, I don't have the jap version of the game itself. I kinda thought it might have meant that considering what the GDT told the HoT.

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

GDT didn't tell HoT anything except that he was an orphaned Hylian.

I suppose no one had the presence of mind to think about what it would mean if the two actually were related.

It's never happened and most likely never will. Makes little sense as well.

I meant, I kinda thought it meant "Zelda is your destiny", because the GDT told the HoT that he needed to meet the princess of destiny.

The whole reason for the retcon was the removal of Ganondorf from the backstory.

Re: Triforce of the Gods Manual - Proper English Translation

The original manual is still Canon (as it is telling the story of OoT) its just that it doesnt really have a direct connection with aLttP (thanks to WW). Thats why they took it out of the gba manual.

Kudos for you for translating Japanese! but seriosly, this would get more replies in Zelda theorising.
